Progress evident for girls golf

Shauna Zacher’s score of 118 led the Custer High School girls golf team last Thursday morning when the Wildcats traveled south to Southern Hills Golf Course for the Hot Springs Invitational.
“I am really happy with how the girls are progressing through the season,” head coach Haley Uphoff said. “We are coming up on conference and region and I think we will be playing our best golf at that time, which of course is the goal.”

Throwers lead the way for ’Cats

Kellyn Kortemeyer’s pair of first-place finish in the girls’ throwing events highlighted the Custer High School track team’s day at the Rapid City Track O’Rama last Friday at O’Hare Stadium at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The meet was held for field events only.
Kortemeyer set a new personal record (PR) in winning the shot put with a top throw of 46-1 1/2. Her winning discus toss was 131-6.

’Cats compete in Sioux Falls

It was a weekend of stiff competition for the Custer High School track team last week as the team made the trek east to Sioux Falls to compete in both the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invitational and the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday and Saturday.
“It turned into a pretty good weekend for us,” head coach Karen Karim said. “We saw where we are in a lot of things and we had some kids step up and have some great performances.”

Wildcats fourth at rainy Douglas Invite

The Custer High School girls golf team came in fourth out of 11 teams at the Douglas Invitational on April 27, but they got a little wet in the process. The tournament held at Box Elder was dubbed the “Douglas Rainy Invite” after the fact because rain showers shortened the event from 18 to nine holes. The Wildcats had a combined score of 227 strokes. Hot Springs won the event with a score of 190.
Freshman Maddie Meyer shot a 47 to take fifth place overall in the event. She was just three strokes behind the tournament champion, Sydney Olstad of Hot Springs.

Tennyson flies past school record

It is frequently said that records are meant to be broken. While that may be true, it takes much, much longer for some records to fall.
Such was the case with the Custer High School boys long jump record, which for the past 49 years has stood at 21-5. Mark Pendleton set the record in 1972, and it has remained in place as one of the oldest school track records in Custer.
That was until last Thursday, anyway.

Golfers second at Belle tourney

Custer eighth grade golfer Shauna Zacher shot a 108 in 18 holes to lead her team to a second place finish among six teams at the Belle Fourche Invitational on Thursday.
“She did really well,” said coach Haley Uphoff, “so I’m really proud of her.”
Teammate Maddie Meyer missed being in the top 10 by just one stroke. The freshman shot a 116 to finish in 11th place.
Next up for the Wildcats was freshman Lauryn Robb with a score of 122. Robb came in 14th overall. Eighth grader Jordan Uphoff shot a 125 to finish in 17th place.

Personal records galore for ’Cats

It was a personal record  bonanza for the Custer High School track team last Saturday in Belle Fourche, as over 20 such records fell for the Wildcats at the Center of the Nation Track Meet.
The meet was the only meet of the week for the Wildcats, as the Track-O-Rama scheduled for Friday in Rapid City was cancelled due to poor weather.
“It was good after two weeks of work to get a meet in,” head coach Karen Karim said, as both the Track-O-Rama and last week’s Queen City Classic in Spearfish were cancelled recently. “That was important for us to have that chance to race.”

Strong showing for ’Cats at Douglas

The Custer High School track team continued its strong early-season showing at the Douglas Early Bird track meet, using the warm weather and relative lack of wind to bring home multiple medals in a multitude of events.
“Holy cow, it was warm,” head coach Karen Karim said. “It wasn’t even really windy and it’s always windy (at Douglas). We just go from one (weather) extreme to the other.”

Golf team young but passionate

Even after missing the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 shutdowns, Custer High School girls golf coach Haley Uphoff is still working with a young team as she prepares them for their first meet of the season Tuesday.
As the team began practice last week, Uphoff had only four players who have had any actual tournament experience. Those are her four freshmen—Maddie Meyer, Taylee Schramm, Abby Studt and Lauryn Robb. Also on the competition team are eighth graders Julianna Uphoff, Makenna Allen, Jordyn Uphoff, Emily Ness and Shauna Zacher.

Track returns after one-year hiatus

Six hundred and seventy -six days after it last competed in a track meet, the Custer High School track team is back in action.
High school track. You remember that, yes? When Wildcat competitors last stepped onto a track for competition—May 25, 2019 at the Class A State Meet—they were on their way to a second place finish for the girls and a fifth place finish for the boys.
Since that time COVID-19 has wiped out an entire season of track and field, and now 90 Wildcat athletes are poised to pick up where they and others left off in the spring nearly two years ago.
