Boys win season-opening Bill Young Invitational

Once again the Custer boys wrestling team has won the home Bill Young Invitational Wrestling Tournament, and several on the team took spots on the podium.
With a combined 192.5 points, Custer won the tournament, ahead of Sturgis with 187 and Belle Fourche with 183.
“I didn’t think we would [win] this year because we had a lot of voids and we even pulled Riley [Scott] out of the tournament and that’s a 30-point getter. Pulling that off without him is pretty good,” said head coach Jared Webster.

Girls place fifth in Custer meet

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the girls Bill Young Invitational in Custer on Saturday, with several girls placing in the tournament, leading to a fifth place finish for the team. This was the first year that the tournament was split into two days, one for boys and one for girls, due to the rapid growth of the sport among female athletes.

Girls hope experience carries them

Custer High School girls basketball enters its second season under the direction of head coach Tayton Vincent this Friday, and returns three all-conference players and a wealth of other experienced players as it tries to improve upon last year’s 9-12 record.
“The girls are coming in and they are willing to work extremely hard,” Vincent said. “Things are moving along. They know the system coming in. Most of the freshmen participated on the ‘C’ team the second half of last year. It makes that transition a little easier between year one and year two as a head coach.”

If you looked up the definition of potential in the dictionary, you may very well see a photo of the 2004-25 Custer High School boys basketball team.
The Wildcats are dripping with potential.
Eight seniors will suit up for the Wildcats this winter, and all eight will contribute. The team has size, experience and athleticism in spades.

Rangers wrestle in Custer Invite

The Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team got to see what it was made of at the Bill Young Invitational tournament in Custer Dec. 6-7. 
The Ranger boys had the first opportunity to hit the mat with the Dec. 6 tournament. 
Wrestling in the 126 weight class, freshman Cory Ronish placed fourth and scored 14 team points for the Rangers at 3-2.

Girls begin hoops season this week

Hill City high School girls basketball coach Anna Eckert said this year’s team is “very new” since seven girls graduated last year. She says the five new players—three juniors, one sophomore and one freshman—all come from “good basketball backgrounds” and “will contribute greatly” to the program. 
The only returning starter on the team is  Alaina Dean, the Rangers’  point guard. 
“She is extremely quick and a fun defender to watch,” Eckert said, adding, “she will once again be a huge asset.”

Ranger boys ready to take the court

It’s basketball season and the Rangers are set to take the court. Boys head coach Laramie Harvey said the team is returning with four players with a lot of varsity experience—Devin Buehler, Zane Messick, Alex Stoeckmann and Everett Sullivan. He expects games to be fun to watch, with a fast-paced tempo. Harvey sees that team speed as one of its strengths along with the guards who score points and move the ball down the court.
The team is concentrating on  its defense this season.  

Boys working toward another record season

The Custer High School Wildcat boys wrestling team will start off the season at home with duals and a tournament, both in Custer this week.
The boys are expected to have another strong season after two record-breaking years for the team. Last year the team placed third at state, its highest placement ever after one-upping the previous year’s record of earning fourth. With many returning wrestlers to the team this season, topping the previous years’ state tournament results could be well within reach.

Girl wrestlers will hit the mat this week

The Custer High School Wildcat girl wrestlers will hit the mat in the first meets of the season this week, the Custer Duals and Custer Invitational on Thursday and Saturday.
The girls team is still relatively young, and yet many of them have now years of experience under their belts.
Returning wrestlers this year include River Bailey, Jessica Hite, Mattea Marshall, Kaylie Morgan, Addie Sander, Essah Syverson and Keira Thorp.  New to the team this year are Tiara Faehnrich, Avari Dorrance and Kylie Bird, Faehnrich transfering from Hill City this year.

Robison takes on wrestling program

The Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team has a new head coach this year. Josh Robison grew up in Hill City and attended school here from kindergarten through 12th grade. 
“I wrestled when Chad Ronish got the program rebuilt in 2005, and I wrestled from probably 2006 to when I graduated in 2010,” said Robison.
