Cheer team 3rd at Stevens meet

 The Custer competitive cheer team had to sit out its own Custer meet last week due to an injury on the team, but coach Cece Lubben says the girls were able to put that behind them and come out stronger than ever to take third place in a meet at Rapid City Stevens High School on Saturday.
“We had a little bit of a rough patch there but we came together as a team and we’ve been giving 100 percent at practice,” said Lubben. “They gave 110 percent in our performance at Stevens.”

Varsity struggles at Hart Ranch

A number of Custer cross country runners had their best times ever at the Rapid City Invitational at Hart Ranch on Friday. Unfortunately, none of them were among the varsity teams’ top five runners, so team scores for the Wildcats suffered mightily. 
The varsity boys scored a 147 as compared with a 36 for team champion Sioux Falls Christian. The Custer boys had to settle for seventh place. Meanwhile, the girls team didn’t enter enough runners in the race to even qualify for team points. 

’Cats second at region golf meet

Bolstered by three golfers finishing in the top 10, the Custer High School golf team played its way to a second-place finish at the Region 4A golf meet Monday at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.
As has been the case most of the season, senior Dustyn Fish led the charge for the Wildcats, as he played his way to a score of 90, which was good for a third-place finish at the meet. Freshman Ryder Bailey finished in seventh place at 94, while Matt Merrill was eighth at 96.

Golfers second at conference meet

The Custer High School golf team began postseason play Monday morning when it traveled to the Black Hills Conference Meet at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.
The Wildcat golfers shot a combined total of 372 in 18 holes to come in second in the meet behind Spearfish. In the process they beat out golfers from St. Thomas More, Belle Fourche, Sturgis, Hot Springs and Douglas.

“I think after a while they just wore us down, being the size they were!” 
That was Custer head coach Dave Williams’ postmortem on Friday evening’s rare gridiron matchup between the Wildcats and the big and deep Scottsbluff, Neb., Bearcats. 
The ‛Cats’ 35-0 loss to the Nebraska team can be mostly explained by the numbers, according to Williams. He said only 19 Custer players dressed for the game in Scottsbluff, while the home team had 75-80 players on the sidelines. 
Then there was the size of the Nebraska players themselves. 

‘Cats fall to Cavs

Still struggling to gain momentum at the beginning of their games, the Custer girls volleyball team got cut down by the St. Thomas More (STM) Cavaliers last Tuesday, Sept. 15. In the match played on STM’s home court, the Wildcats lost in straight sets to the always tough Rapid City team. 

Cheer team sits out Custer meet

The Custer competitive cheer team had to sit out its own cheer and dance meet held at the Armory Monday evening.

Activities Director Joey Kortemeyer said Monday afternoon that an injury to a team member was the reason for the team’s absence from the meet.

The team is next scheduled to compete this Saturday at Rapid City Stevens High School but it is unknown at this time whether the team will be ready for that meet.

Wildcats sweep Custer Invite

The Custer boys and girls cross country teams each had four runners in the top six finishers of the varsity races last Thursday to sweep the team titles in the Eldon Knudson Custer Invitational meet at Rocky Knolls Golf Course. 

Football gets first win of the season

It probably wasn’t how the Hill City Rangers wanted — or expected — to get their first win of the season.

A potent Rangers ground game got the team their first win of the season in a game against the Edgemont Moguls on Sept. 11.

Senior Jaxon Johnson lead the way for the Rangers, picking up three touchdowns — two off a handoff and one off of a kick return.

Johnson’s three touchdowns helped to lead the Rangers to a 38-28 win. All Rangers points came off of either kick returns or rushing plays.

Volleyball wins close match

The Rangers might have won 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-20) against the Spearfish Spartans on Sept. 10, but there was nothing easy about the win.

The mood in Gins Gym was electric that night as the two teams traded leads with one another before the Rangers closed out the game.

The match started out with a strong start by the Rangers, who went up 11-0 in the first set thanks to some excellent service by senior Hailey Wathen, who had two aces during that run.

Spearfish, though, did not go quietly into that goodnight.
