Wildcat volleyball third at LNI

The Custer High School girls volleyball team played several games last week and began October by placing third at the Lakota Nation Invitational over the weekend in Rapid City. The Wildcats finished the tournament with a total of five match wins.
Custer’s first matchup at the tournament was versus Crow Creek High School, and the Wildcats earned a two-sets-to-one win over Crow Creek, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19.
Head coach Jill Hohn said “this good start composed the whole tournament well.”

Cross country shines in team scores

The Custer High School cross country team is now in its last month of racing cross country and competed well last week at the Sturgis Invitational.
Head coach Karen Karim said the girls varsity “had a solid showing” amid a blistering  “86 degree day and dusty Ft. Meade course.”
The Wildcat varsity girls came in third place with a team score of 104.
Competing against 22 schools, Karim said “the girls did well against pretty big schools from Wyoming and the Hills. Now we’re at the point where we’re competing as a team,” she said.

Johnson receives lifetime achievement award

Alan Johnson, executive vice president of Recreational Adventure Co. (RAC), was recently honored with the Darrell Booth Lifetime Achievement Award by Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA). 
 
The award was presented last week during RAC’s annual managers meeting in Hill City. Johnson is the seventh recipient of the award since its creation in 2011.
 
Johnson is the third generation of his family to promote outdoor hospitality in the Black Hills.
 

Ranger runners beat the heat

The Hill City Ranger cross country team raced at the Sturgis Invitational Cross Country Meet Sept. 29 and when the meet began, it was nearly 90 degrees outside.
 
“In spite of all that, we were really encouraged,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “Kids were positive and they got after the race and were competitive.” 
 
Although the heat forced some athletes to drop out of the race, every runner from Hill City finished. 
 
Noyes said, “We were very encouraged by that.”

Rangers prepare for winless Wildcats

The Hill City Rangers football team fell to the Rapid City Christian Comets this past Friday by a score of 55-8.
 
The Rangers looked strong during the first half of the first quarter, scoring on a well-executed series of drives and holding the Comets to within a reasonable surmountable lead.
 
But the team was inconsistent and by the end of the first quarter, the score was 21-8 in favor of the Comets.
 

Volleyball tourney on tap

The Hill City Rangers girls volleyball team is 14-6 after a win against the Philip Scotties.
 
Despite losing the first set, the Rangers bounced back and the match ended in four sets,  24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22.
 
Coach Allie Henderson is overall very pleased with the way the team is playing. “It’s nice to play well in the present, and good to know that there is still a bright future. I’m feeling great at this point in the season.”
 

Volleyball team wins a pair of matches

Custer’s high school volleyball team snapped its losing streak last week and recorded two wins and one loss in its last three matches.
Tuesday’s match versus Pine Ridge was a win, 3-2. Thursday’s game versus Spearfish resulted in a hard-fought 3-1 loss and Custer won versus Kadoka 2-1 in Saturday’s game.
Neither match the team came out on top in was easy, but the wins spurred the Wildcats to the most winning they’ve had in the season so far.

’Cats play ‘best game of the season’

When the Custer High School football team’s schedule was released last summer, most in this neck of the woods who saw it were shocked, appalled or both.
One of the main reasons for that displeasure was the fact the ’Cats would repeatedly have to travel across the state to tangle with East River schools five and six hours from Custer.

Cheerleaders improve scores at Stevens

Custer High School’s competitive cheer team put 10 cheerleaders on the mat at the Rapid City Stevens Invite on Saturday and was able to incorporate some of its more challenging material in its second competition of the season.
“We saw a significant increase in our scores over (our first meet at) Spearfish,” said head coach Sheri Deatherage.

The Custer High School cross country team competed last week at Rapid City’s Invitational. Over 30 school teams were present, so each race had more than one hundred entrants.
The varsity boy’s 5K race reflected one of Custer’s standouts, Gage Grohs, finishing in 11th place at 16:48.
Head coach Karen Karim said Drew Lehman also had a “good race as well” and finished the 5K in 17:37, 31st place.
Custer’s coach Karim also noted ninth grader Kian Rusch’s  good effort to come in at 19:22.
