Rangers trounce Wildcats in three

After two previous defeats at the hands of the Hill City Rangers already this season, the Custer Wildcats knew they in for a tough battle on the volleyball court Oct. 20 when they traveled to meet the 22-2 Rangers on their home court. However, in spite of advance preparation in practice, the Wildcats were disappointed once again as the Rangers won easily in straight sets, 25-14, 25-13, 25-11. 

’Cats lose heartbreaker to Broncs

For the second consecutive year, the Custer High School football team will be spectators for the Class A football playoffs.
And, for the second consecutive year, it was the Belle Fourche Broncs who escorted the Wildcats out of the playoff race, besting the Wildcats by a field goal—the same margin of victory as a year ago—in a 17-14 win at Wildcat Field last Thursday evening.
This year’s loss was even more heartbreaking for the Wildcats, as it came on a 29-yard field goal as time expired.

Girls cross country is 5A champions

It’s another magical season for Hill City Cross Country as the girls team won the Region 5A championship with freshman Abby Cutler winning individual champion, while the boys are sending three team members to the state meet.

All of this comes after the Region 5A meet Oct. 15.

XC boys capture region 5A title

The Custer varsity boys placed all six runners in the top 20 at the Region 5A cross country meet on Thursday to claim the regional title and punch their ticket to the state cross country meet this Saturday at Hart Ranch. The girls team had four runners in the top 20 and placed second behind Hill City to also qualify for the state meet. 
Junior Miles Ellman was the frontrunner again for the boys, placing third with a time of 17:34.04 behind returning state champion Sawyer Clarkson of Belle Fourche and Cody Farland of St. Thomas More (STM). 

’Cats beat Bison, fall to Cavaliers

The loss of a key senior player showed up in both a loss and a win in games last week for the Custer girls volleyball team. On Thursday the Wildcats hosted the St. Thomas More (STM) Cavaliers at the Armory and lost in straight sets. However, in a makeup home game against the Hot Springs Lady Bison on Saturday the ’Cats won but took four sets to do it. 
Prior to the STM game the team lost senior Heidi Moore to an ankle injury which had an impact on both games according to co-head coach Jill Hohn, who said losing a key player upsets the whole rhythm of the game.

It’s come down to that for the Custer High School football team.
The Wildcats, 4-3, currently hold the eighth seed in the Class A playoff pictured heading into Thursday night’s regular season finale against visiting Belle Fourche. Should the Wildcats win, it’s a virtually certainty they will retain the eighth seed and head off to a quarterfinal playoff game east of the Missouri next Thursday. Lose, and well, things get much more dicey.

Cheer team fourth at BHC meet

The Custer High School competitive cheer team placed fourth out of five teams in the cheer portion of the Black Hills Conference Spirit Competition in Sturgis on Thursday. Coach Cece Lubben said she was pleased with that placement in light of the fact that two team members dropped out the day before and the team had less than five hours of practice in which to change the entire routine.
The coach did not state the reason for the absences but noted she was proud of her team for how they handled the quick adjustment. 

Volleyball upsets Rapid City Christian

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team put on a master class and defeated the Rapid City Christian Comets 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 27-25) in a match on Oct. 8.

The Comets had one loss heading into the game and had defeated the Rangers earlier in a tournament; however, the Rangers came out to play that night.

Football team posts second consecutive shutout

What do you do for an encore after a shutout of Bennett County?
If you’re the Custer High School football team, you do the same thing, only this time you do it on homecoming in front of the home fans.
For the second consecutive Friday evening the Wildcat defense was an impenetrable purple and gold wall as the Wildcats thumped the visiting Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers 42-0 last Friday at Wildcat Field.

Fish finishes in top 25 at state

The Custer High School boys golf team wrapped up its season last week in Hot Springs, participating in the Class A State Meet at Southern Hills Golf Course Oct. 5-6.
Dustyn Fish was the top scorer for the team at the meet, shooting 86-83 169. That score was good for a tie for 22nd.
Ryder Bailey finished 49th at the meet, with a total of 93-90 183, while Gunner Prior was 69th at 105-88 193. Matthew Merrill was just behind Prior at 98-96 194. Ethan Lappe was the other Wildcat to participate in the met.
