Wildcat boys take third at Black Hills Classic

Staying close to home last week, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School boys wrestling team headed to Hill City to compete in the Black Hills Classic Tournament Feb. 7. The Wildcats placed third in the tournament with 167 points.

Rebounds. Turnovers. Attempted field goals.  Physicality.
Throughout the box score and beyond, the Custer High School girls basketball team won almost every statistical battle against the Belle Fourche Broncs last Saturday in Belle Fourche.
Almost.
The one glaring exception—as has been the case most of the season—was in shooting percentage, as the ’Cats made only nine of 67 shot attempts—a 13 percent clip—in a 52-26 defeat.

Wildcats ride two-game win streak into week

After suffering 10 consecutive losses the Custer High School basketball team is now riding a two-game win streak, including defeating Belle Fourche 63-43 last Saturday afternoon in Belle Fourche.
Head coach Tayton Vincent started a lineup of Mason Dirkes, Zachary Cooper, Jaden Chee-Fisher, Brennan Gangel and Carter Cooper and said that group started things rolling energy-wise on the court, hitting some early shots and sharing the basketball the first five minutes of the quarter before some of the usual starters came in and kept the momentum going.

Girls gear up for postseason

Moseying on over to Newcastle, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School girls wrestling team competed in the 2026 Lady Dogie Invite at the high school Feb. 7.
“The Newcastle tournament is always interesting because we meet a lot of different competition from Wyoming than we normally would see,” said coach Clayton Sander. 
Trying out the smaller 105-pound weight class, Cassidy Lundy placed sixth and scored three team points.

Wildcat girls no match for Comets, Cavaliers

Going against the top two teams in Region 8A last week, the Custer High School girls basketball team was likely going to have to play its best games of the season—and maybe see a downturn from its opponents—in order to come away with wins, or at the very least close losses.
Unfortunately for Custer neither of those things ocurred, as the Wildcats were blown out in both games, including last Saturday against St. Thomas More in Rapid City.

Wildcat girl wrestlers take on a lighter schedule

As the wrestling season draws to a close, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School girls team is focusing on resting the experienced wrestlers for the region and state meets, while giving the less experienced wrestlers more time on the mat.
The Wildcats’ week started at the Douglas Triangular Jan. 29. Coach Clayton Sander said that with only four girls competing for Custer, the final scores do not reflect how the girls did in the duals. 

Wildcats can’t crack back into win column

The Custer High School boys basketball team’s losing streak grew to nine games Jan. 27 at the Armory, as the visiting Rapid City Christian Comets came to town and rolled to a 63-40 victory over the ’Cats.
Custer fell behind 8-1 quickly before Brady Virtue drove for two of his team-high 13 points, which he followed up with another drive moments later.
The Comets took an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter following a Henry Koppmann basket inside, which was answered by the first of Cheydon McPhee’s three three-pointers for Custer.

Wildcat boy wrestlers win Douglas Triangular

Starting the week with a win, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School boys wrestling team took on the Douglas Triangular Jan. 29 with duals against Chadron and Douglas/Rapid City Christian. 
“We have a good dual team. They had to come away with two wins. Otherwise, we’d have some catching up to do in the state duals. I told them before the dual started, ‘If you guys want to be in the state duals, we’ve got to win these,’ and they stepped up,” said head coach Jared Webster.
The Wildcats started with the dual against Chadron and won 50-30. 

Wildcats boys drop three more

The front-loaded schedule being played by the Custer High School boys basketball team resulted in three more losses last week, as the boys started the week with a loss to Chadron, Neb., and ended it with a home loss to Wall.
The Wildcats battled the visiting Eagles, one of the top-ranked teams in Class B, for well into the fourth quarter until a strange and confusing series of events turned a seven-point deficit into a 12-point deficit. 

Wildcat girls battle sickness, competition

Still battling sickness across the team, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School girls wrestling team brought five girls up to the 2026 Governor Girls Wrestling Invite in Pierre Jan. 23, where the Wildcats took ninth place with 41.5 team points. Unfortunately, due to the cold temperatures and school closures, half of the competition expected did not attend the tournament.
