Youth basketball wins tournament

A Hill City Youth Athletics team made up of boys from first through third grade won the Polar Bear Classic Basketball Tournament for their age group last week.

According to head coach Andi Bauer, this was the culmination of hard work.

“We started off the year rough, but we picked it up quickly,” she said.

This was Bauer’s first year coaching basketball; however, she is not new with boys sports. She has coached that same group of kids in wrestling, soccer, baseball and football since some of them were in kindergarten.

Four wrestlers qualify for state

Hill City qualified four wrestlers for the State Class B wrestling tournament to be held this weekend in Rapid City. They are: Hunter Way (126), Braden Weiss (132), Jaxon Johnson (138) and Tanner Davis (220). The complete results for our Region 4B tournament held last Saturday are as follows:

Eleven Wildcat wrestlers qualify for state

For the first time in recent memory the Custer High School wrestling team has qualified 11 wrestlers for the state B wrestling tournament. The group, dubbed “The Elite Eleven,” placed second behind Philip at the Region 4B tourney in Rapid City on Saturday to earn a trip back to Rapid this weekend for the state finals.

Wildcat girls look to Winner for region matchup

It’s playoff time for the Custer High School girls basketball team, and the team entered play last night in the first round of super region play as the No. 7 seed against the very same Lead-Deadwood Golddigger team it defeated last Thursday evening at the Armory by the score of 62-25.
Rather than the traditional regional play, this year’s playoffs feature the super region—a combination of three teams from Region 7A and all of Region 8A—because the rest of the teams in Region 7A did not play basketball this fall due to COVID-19.

It is frequently said in sports circles that it is hard to beat a team three times in one season if the teams are relatively evenly-matched. The Custer High School boys basketball season will hope that isn’t true—at least for them this season.
That’s because the Wildcats, now 12-8 on the season, will likely host the Lakota Tech Tatanka for the third time this season next Friday in super region play, with a berth in the SoDak 16 on the line.

Boys basketball playing their best come crunch time

The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team continues to show improvement, according to head coach Nate Bayne.

The team went 1-1 this week with an eight point win over Philip High School and a tight game against Winner High School, one of the top ranked teams in the state.

“We showed some improvement on the defensive end, as well as rebounding,” Bayne said. “The guys are really sharing the ball well.”

On Friday, Bayne said Jovani Sanchez really stepped up for both the junior varsity and varsity games, hitting six three pointers combined.

Boys pick up big wins over Tatanka, Broncs

In desperate need of wins in order to host a home super region playoff game, the Custer High School boys basketball team did just that Monday and Saturday.
The Wildcats defeated Lakota Tech, a team ahead of them in the super region standings, for the second time this season Monday evening at the Armory by the score of 71-56.
“We felt we needed to play good defense, and if we did that, (the game) would take care of itself,” head coach Paul Kelley said.

Girls falter in games against Belle, Spearfish

If the Custer High School girls basketball team can put together four quarters of basketball, it can play with anybody.
That has been the mantra of Tobey Cass since he began serving in the role of game coach 11 games into the season.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they played six good quarters and two bad quarters in a pair of losses last week, which snapped the four-game winning streak that had the team threatening to climb back to .500 after a 3-8 start.

’Cats runners-up at Black Hills Classic

Wildcat wrestlers took second place honors at the Black Hills Classic Tournament in Hill City on Saturday losing only to the Class B West River powerhouse Philip Scotties.
In their last outing before the big dance begins at the Region 4B tourney in Rapid City on Feb. 20, the ‛Cats earned 125 team points to Philip’s 197.5.
Tray Weiss, wrestling at 106 pounds, was the only Custer wrestler to win a first place title. Weiss, an eighth grader, scored 24 points for his team and won an 18-4 major decision over Gage Anderson of Lemmon in the match for first.
