Delayed delivery hurting newspapers

Delayed Postal Service deliveries of small-town newspapers are frustrating readers, undermining subscriptions and hurting advertising revenue, according to publishers across South Dakota.
“It’s taking nine days to get a paper from Armour to Sioux Falls,” said Julie Hinckley of Rocket Printing, which prints several small-town publications. “That’s unacceptable for timely news.”

Lawmakers seek to ban candy, soda from SNAP benefits

Two state lawmakers who work in health care want Republican South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden’s help to ban sugary drinks, candy and “other non-nutritious items” from a nutrition program for low-income people.
Sen. Sydney Davis, R-Burbank, and Rep. Taylor Rehfedt, R-Sioux Falls, sent Rhoden a letter this week asking him to seek a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prohibit families on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) from purchasing the items.

Going geothermal to grow fresh food

Do you ever wish you could grow pineapples in your front yard? Michael and Kim Fazio of Fazio Family Farm in Hermosa did just that in their geothermal greenhouse last summer.
The Fazios’ venture into greenhouse gardening began 24 years ago as a way to provide healthy produce for their family. Along the way, they picked up aquaponics and learned how to grow fresh bass and catfish.

6:59 p.m.: A tourist from Nebraska dialed 911 to breathlessly report a family was taking pictures of each other holding “AR-15s” on a trail near the state-managed Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park on state land. A deputy investigated, finding no one in the area carrying any evil black rifles—just the usual walking sticks.

Democrats host McGovern Day Rally

With a theme of “Unite. Act. Change the Future.” Custer County Democrats gathered at Laughing Water Restaurant at Crazy Horse Memorial May 3 for the annual McGovern Day Rally.
The evening started with hors d’oeuvres and social hour. Custer County chairperson Mary Wheaton welcomed everyone to the McGovern Day Rally and invited all those in attendance who value and support the Custer County Democrats vision to promote democracy, universal human rights, economic justice, environmentalism and a culture of peace to join our growing community.
