Mechaleys attend State of the Union

Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley, along with wife Jen, got the opportunity of a lifetime Feb. 24 when they were invited by Rep. Dusty Johnson to attend the State of the Union Address (SOTU) in Washington, D.C.
Mechaley said he was at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs when he got the call from Johnson inviting him to the address. Marty said Johnson told him he could think about it, but Marty said that would not be necessary.

Hjem A.M. James Beard Award semifinalist

They didn’t even know they had been nominated for Best Chef: Midwest. They didn’t know they had been serving members of the James Beard Foundation, who were evaluating their restaurant. However, it wouldn’t have mattered even if they had known. Erik and Camillia Hjortnaes were simply following their passion for crafting an excellent breakfast and serving customers well.

Call of the Week
Saturday, March 7
12:21 p.m.: Deputies were back at the same residence, as one of the participants in the previous fracas, a 41-year-old Custer male, had returned in a vehicle and was yelling at other residents there. After some investigation, the deputies arrested the male for fourth-offense felony driving under the influence of alcohol. The moral of this story should be obvious.

Hermosa Elders’ Wisdom March 2

Children at Hermosa School are sharing wisdom gleaned from local elders during the Elders’ Wisdom Children’s Song program March 2 at 6 p.m. This year, the elders being honored are Joy Neugebauer and Don Knapp. 
The program was originally started in Spearfish in 1999 by Hank and Marianne Fridell, along with Larry Long, the driving force behind the Community Celebration of Place out of Minneapolis, Minn. Long was brought in the first year through a grant.
