Wildcat wrestlers win conference title

Custer wrestlers ran away with the team title among eight teams at Saturday’s Black Hills Conference Tournament in Belle Fourche. The Wildcats racked up 186 team points, outpacing the second place Douglas Patriots by nearly 70 points and grabbing four first place and five second place titles in various weight classes.

If you go down the list of of teams on the Custer High School girls basketball team’s schedule to date, most of the games were games head coach Mick Patzlaff—and plenty of others—looked at and thought, “yah, we can win that one.”
Fast forward to halfway through the season, and the Wildcats sit at 3-8 after two more losses last week. It’s a record that is disappointing to Patzlaff and team members.
“We have had games that in my mind, I think ‘we’re better,’” Patzlaff said. “Maybe I’m just wrong. Maybe we’re not better, but I just don’t believe that.”

Girls topple Newell to snap losing skid

 A tough week ended on a positive note for the Custer High School girls basketball team last Saturday as the Wildcats traveled to Newell and defeated the previously unbeaten Irrigators 49-41. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Wildcats.
“It was a good win for us. We played well, shot the ball well and got some stuff in transition,” head coach Mick Patzlaff said.

Wildcats win two, lose two at Mid-Dakota Monster

Custer High School wrestlers got a chance to evaluate some of their toughest statewide competition over the weekend and came away from duals at the Mid-Dakota Monster in Presho with two wins and two losses.  
The wins came in matches against Lead-Deadwood and Lyman and the losses were at the hands of wrestling powerhouses Winner and McCook Central-Montrose (MCM).
Head coach Jared Webster said while he is pleased with the two wins he his most happy because of the opportunity to evaluate some of the toughest competition.

Wildcat boys basketball wins a pair, falls to Cubs

When you play six games over the course of two weeks, it’s not unlikely you would eventually run out of gas.
That appeared to be the case for the Custer High School boys basketball team Saturday in Chamberlain.
The Wildcats finished up a furious two weeks of action in their game against the Cubs, a 62-47 loss where head coach Paul Kelley said the team couldn’t do much of anything right.

Shooting woes, turnovers hurting ’Cats

Following a 52-41 loss to West Central last Saturday at the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell, the Custer High School boys basketball team sits with a 3-3 record, a two-game losing streak, an injured scoring leader and shooting woes.
The Wildcats struggled from both the floor and the free throw line in going 1-2 in three games over New Year’s weekend, including a 30 percent shooting effort against the Trojans. The Wildcats were 0-14 from three-point range in the game, as well as 9-21 from the free throw line.

Girls score only 23 against Madison

Last Saturday’s game against Madison resembled more of a game the Custer High School girls basketball team would have played last year, as the Wildcats hit only 17 percent of their shots in a 34-23 loss in a game played at the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell.
The Wildcats hit only one of their 19 three-point attempts, while also connecting on only 24 percent of their shots inside the arc.

Depleted boys split games

Welcome to Custer High School basketball, WJ—without Jace.
Jace, of course, is the Wildcats’ leading scorer Jace Kelley, whose nearly 20 points per game a year ago and 27 opening-night points were MIA last weekend as he missed both of last weekend’s games (and is expected to miss at least two more) due to a hand injury suffered in physical education class.

Wrestlers runners up at Hot Springs tourney

The Wildcat wrestlers captured second place honors among a dozen teams at the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza over the weekend and three middleweight wrestlers came away with first and second place finishes.
Sophomore Jonathan Lewis (10-1) won the 145- pound title and collected 26 points for his team. Lewis won all three of his tourney matches by fall. In the quarterfinal match he pinned his opponent in 1:14 and had a pin in 1:23 in the semifinals as well. In the first place match, Lewis pinned Ryder Rowland of Miller/Highmore-Harrold (MHH) in a mere 45 seconds.

Girls suffer consecutive blowout losses

“We are looking at 1-19 if we come out and give the effort we gave in the last couple of games.”
Custer head coach Mick Patzlaff didn’t mince words when discussing the Custer High School girls basketball team’s two games last weekend, in which the ’Cats were hammered by 33 points in each game.
Whatever the most severe form of dejection is, it summed up Patzlaff following the games.
“I thought we would at least compete. That was obviously not the case,” he said. “I thought we had a group of kids who wanted to go out and compete.”
