Golfers place 13th at state meet

The Custer High School girls golf team’s first trip to the State A golf tournament to play as a team since their current coach was a high school golfer herself didn’t result in any awards or medals. However, coach Haley Uphoff says the young team had a positive experience which she believes will set them up for success in the years ahead.

Cutler brings home two medals

Hill City freshman Abby Cutler brought home a pair of medals—including a silver in the 3200—from the South Dakota Class A State Track Meet last weekend in Spearfish.
Cutler’s second place finish in the 3200 came in at a time of 11:42.19, while she was also sixth in the 1600 at a time of 5:24.07.
As a team, the Rangers finished in 16th place with 17 team points. West Central won the team championship with 66 points, followed by Custer with 53 points and Hamlin at 40 points.

Girls second, boys third at state

Blake Boyster admits it—he was nervous prior to his 400 race at last weekend’s South Dakota Class A State Track Meet.
Once the gun went off to  start the race, however, the nerves went away and it was time to get down to business.
Halfway through the race, Boyster had posted a 24-second split, slower than what he wanted. When a teammate told him that time, he knew it was time to kick in a second gear and go faster.

Golfers place fifth at Douglas nine-hole

The Custer girls golf team took fifth out of six teams competing at the Douglas Wind Nine-hole Invite in Box Elder on Tuesday, May 25, and placed three golfers in an 18-hole JV tourney at the same course on Thursday.
Hot Springs edged out the Spearfish Spartans by one stroke to win the Tuesday tourney with a team score of 212. Host Douglas came in third with 239 and Rapid City Stevens shot a team score of 242 for fourth.

Two Rangers qualify for state meet

The Hill City High Ranger golfers competed in the Region 6B golf meet May 24 at Hart Ranch outside of Rapid City. Coach Byron Christian said all of the golfers showed significant improvement over the course of the day, playing in less than ideal conditions that included winds gusting over 25 mph.

The Hill City High School girls track team grabbed four championships on the way to a third-place team finish at the Region 8A Track Meet last Thursday in Spearfish.
Jazzla Hutto was the lone Ranger to grab an individual championship at the meeting, doing so in the 1600 in a personal record (PR) time of 5:42.25.

Golf team is state tourney bound

For the first time in more than a decade the Custer High School girls golfers will play as a team at the State A Tournament on June 7-8. Five Wildcat golfers competed in the Region 8A tourney in Spearfish on Tues., May 18 to qualify as a team for the state tourney.
The last time a Custer team qualified for the state tourney was 2007 when the Wildcats placed ninth at state. That was when coach Haley (Davenport) Uphoff was a high school sophomore golfing for Custer. As reported by the Chronicle at the time, Uphoff’s score of 201 lead the team at the state tourney.

Ranger athletes honored

Student athletes and coaches celebrated the approaching end of the Hill City High School athletic year with an awards banquet.

The event featured all sports teams, coaches and managers for a yearlong wrap of seasons.

Many coaches told inside jokes while also recognizing lettered athletes, graduating seniors, and even students who were not recognized last year due to COVID-19.

Cheerleaders, who supported both the football and basketball season, were honored by coach Rudi McDaniels, who pointed out the unique talents and attributes of each squad member.
