Keeping up with district made easier

Custer School District has a new messaging system, as well as a new app, to keep students, families and patrons up to date on anything they need to know for school and activities.
“When there is a snow day, for example, with the new system, administration can send one notice and it will instantly post to the district’s website live feed, to Facebook, as well as send a text, email and phone call to all staff and student families at the same time,” said superintendent Mark Naugle.

Custer School District welcomes eight new teachers

With the new school year at Custer School District comes eight new teachers in Hermosa, Custer Elementary and Custer Jr./Sr. High School.
Custer Elementary School welcomed three of those teachers, Jamie Neugebauer, Susan Ostenson and Kristin Seidler.
After five years away, 2019 Custer High School graduate Neugebauer is back to Custer, this time as a teacher.
“I wanted to teach here to be closer to family and be back in this community. I’ve missed the Black Hills and am glad to be back,” said Neugebauer.

Young Life archery set for Aug. 31

Summer is soon coming to an end, and with that comes the 11th annual Young Life Archery Tournament Saturday, Aug. 31, five miles west of Hill City on the Deerfield Road.

Band directors want live all-state auditions

The state’s high school band directors have offered a plan that they hope will allow for live auditions for students trying out for All-State Band. The plan was approved at Thursday’s meeting of the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) board of directors.
In the past, the association has used the state airplane to fly judges to audition sites across the state over two weekends in January. On the third weekend judges were driven to the audition site.

CHS prom Saturday

Custer High School Prom will be held this Saturday, April 20 at Custer Jr./Sr. High School.
The theme for this year’s prom is Northern Lights. Prom-goers should arrive to the high school at 6 p.m. to get ready before grand march in the theater at 6:30 p.m.
The dance will start with the father/daughter and mother/son dances at 7 p.m. and will continue until 11 p.m. Following the dance will be a post-prom event organized by junior parents. Permission slips will need to be signed and turned in prior to be able to attend.

 

HOSA students travel to state event

Custer Future Health Professional (HOSA) Club members recently competed at the state competion April 11-12 in Sioux Falls. While at the competition 10 students qualified for the HOSA International Leadership Conference in June in Houston, Texas. Below is a list of qualifiers and placewinners.

Studt serves as legislative page

“I think that kids my age should get involved in our government. Even if you’re not going to go into it, you need to just see how it works,” said Custer High School senior Abby Studt, who recently served as a page in the 99th South Dakota State Legislature in Pierre. “It’s important because we’re up next.”

Cass to be featured on Rising Star of the West

Custer High School senior Bailey Cass will be featured as part of KEVN Black Hills FOX’s Rising Star of the West scholarship contest Thursday, March 7, on The SIX and on Black Hills FOX News at 9 p.m. Cass qualified for the contest by submitting a short video of herself to KEVN Black Hills FOX. Cass is one of the semi-finalists who will be seen through March 22. Her one-minute commentary will be aired and then placed on blackhillsfox.com for viewers to watch and rate.  One competitor from each week will then advance to the final round in May.

Brandt wins Voice of Democracy contest

Lexi Brandt from Hill City High School was recognized by Custer VFW Post 3442 as this year’s Voice of Democracy winner.
VFW Post 3442 scholarship chair Corey Virtue said that in the organization’s Voice of Democracy contest, Brandt has taken first place at the post, district and state level. She will now go to Washington, D.C., March 2 to compete against 49 other students for a chance to win up to $35,000 in scholarships.

Hermosa Elder’s Wisdom program Thursday

Last year, Hermosa Elementary School students took part for the first time in the Elder’s Wisdom, Children’s Song program, a long-time Custer tradition. This year, they will host a program of their own as the fourth and fifth grade students honor Stringbean Svenson and Maxine Knapp. The program begins at 6 p.m. at the Hermosa school tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 15.
Elder’s Wisdom, Children’s Song aims to bring communities together and bridge generational divides through narrative and song.
