Golfers second at Belle tourney

Custer eighth grade golfer Shauna Zacher shot a 108 in 18 holes to lead her team to a second place finish among six teams at the Belle Fourche Invitational on Thursday.
“She did really well,” said coach Haley Uphoff, “so I’m really proud of her.”
Teammate Maddie Meyer missed being in the top 10 by just one stroke. The freshman shot a 116 to finish in 11th place.
Next up for the Wildcats was freshman Lauryn Robb with a score of 122. Robb came in 14th overall. Eighth grader Jordan Uphoff shot a 125 to finish in 17th place.

Personal records galore for ’Cats

It was a personal record  bonanza for the Custer High School track team last Saturday in Belle Fourche, as over 20 such records fell for the Wildcats at the Center of the Nation Track Meet.
The meet was the only meet of the week for the Wildcats, as the Track-O-Rama scheduled for Friday in Rapid City was cancelled due to poor weather.
“It was good after two weeks of work to get a meet in,” head coach Karen Karim said, as both the Track-O-Rama and last week’s Queen City Classic in Spearfish were cancelled recently. “That was important for us to have that chance to race.”

Strong showing for ’Cats at Douglas

The Custer High School track team continued its strong early-season showing at the Douglas Early Bird track meet, using the warm weather and relative lack of wind to bring home multiple medals in a multitude of events.
“Holy cow, it was warm,” head coach Karen Karim said. “It wasn’t even really windy and it’s always windy (at Douglas). We just go from one (weather) extreme to the other.”

Golf team young but passionate

Even after missing the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 shutdowns, Custer High School girls golf coach Haley Uphoff is still working with a young team as she prepares them for their first meet of the season Tuesday.
As the team began practice last week, Uphoff had only four players who have had any actual tournament experience. Those are her four freshmen—Maddie Meyer, Taylee Schramm, Abby Studt and Lauryn Robb. Also on the competition team are eighth graders Julianna Uphoff, Makenna Allen, Jordyn Uphoff, Emily Ness and Shauna Zacher.

Track returns after one-year hiatus

Six hundred and seventy -six days after it last competed in a track meet, the Custer High School track team is back in action.
High school track. You remember that, yes? When Wildcat competitors last stepped onto a track for competition—May 25, 2019 at the Class A State Meet—they were on their way to a second place finish for the girls and a fifth place finish for the boys.
Since that time COVID-19 has wiped out an entire season of track and field, and now 90 Wildcat athletes are poised to pick up where they and others left off in the spring nearly two years ago.

If the athletes who participated in last week’s developmental meet in Rapid City were supposed to be rusty after nearly two years sans track, someone forgot to tell the Custer High School track team.
The Wildcats wasted little time in establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the conference, region and state when they piled up personal records and medals in their first track meet since the Class A State Track Meet in 2019.
While the outstanding results may have been a surprise to some, they weren’t to head coach Karen Karim.

Chargers pummel ’Cats in SoDak 16

For the second consecutive year, the Custer High School boys basketball team had its season ended one game shy of the state tournament, as the Wildcats were routed by Sioux Falls Christian 85-55 in the SoDak 16 March 9 in Plankinton.
It was a tough loss for the senior class that was nine players deep, many of whom had been playing together in Custer uniforms since they were in elementary. Making the state tournament was one of the team’s stated goals prior to the season.

Weiss takes seventh at state

Hill City had four state qualifiers this year: Hunter Way at 126 lbs., Braden Weiss at 132 lbs., Jaxon Johnson at 138 lbs. and Tanner Davis at 220 lbs.

 First time qualifiers were Hunter Way and Jaxon Johnson!

Second time qualifiers were Braden Weiss and Tanner Davis.

The Rangers got rolling the second day of the tournament as Way, Weiss and Davis all picked up wins with Weiss eventually qualifying for the medal rounds and placing seventh place overall in his weight bracket.  Congratulations to the Ranger wrestling team.

Woodward, Weiss, Noem eighth at state

A record 11 Custer Wildcat wrestlers qualified for the state Class B wrestling tournament in Rapid City last week and three came away with medals after placing eighth in the tourney. What’s more, all three (as well as most of their teammates) are young enough to have several more chances to make it to the podium in years ahead.
The trio of medalists included sophomore Landon Woodward (120 pounds), freshman Parker Noem (160) and eighth- grader Tray Weiss (106).

Season ends at the hands of Winner

The Custer High School girls basketball team got an up close and personal look at what it would like to become last Thursday evening in super regional play when the Wildcats traveled to Winner and lost 69-36 to the Warriors, which ended Custer’s season.
As has been the case for much of the season, the Wildcats started the game well, and trailed by only seven after the first quarter, but a 15-4 second quarter and 28-9 third quarter for Winner was too much for the Wildcats to overcome.
