Saturday, Aug. 17
10:37 a.m.: An out-of-stater called 911 to report that a semi-truck was “driving aggressively” by not pulling over and letting “a parade of cars” pass them, on Hwy. 385 south of Custer. The reporting person also said they “wanted a person with a gun” to “talk to the driver about road courtesy.” A deputy followed the truck for a while and reported it was obeying all traffic laws.   

Studebaker show draws crowd

 Many Custer residents came again to enjoy the annual outdoor show of Studebaker and Packard cars and trucks on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1. They joined a crowd of visitors who reported they were from 26 states and four foreign countries. A variety of restored or modified vehicles were on display at Mt. Rushmore Road and 6th Street. Their owners were from eight states and Canada. The show was sponsored by the Dakotas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club.

 10 years ago, 2014 — After three seasons full of laughs, illusions and wonder, the Grand Magic Show was leaving Custer for Branson, Mo. Magician Duane Laflin and his wife, Mary, made the decision after it was made public that Flintstones, the property where Grand Magic is located, was going up for sale...According to the latest data from the Historical Climatology Network, the summer of 2014 was the coldest they’ve ever seen in the U.S. Whether or not the summer of 2014 would go down in the records as the coldest in recorded history, one thing is for sure—it was  colder than average.

Noem commutes sentences for two convicted of murder

Gov. Kristi Noem commuted the sentences of two people convicted of murder and issued 45 more pardons since February.
Since taking office in 2019, Noem has commuted the sentences of 27 people and pardoned 341.
Her first commutation of the summer was granted to 70-year-old John Proctor  July 24.

Deb Hanagan is new 1881 Courthouse Museum director

The 1881 Courthouse Museum has a new director, with Deb Hanagan taking the reigns of the museum. Her first day of work with the museum was last Monday, but already, she is full of ideas and energy to bring the museum to its full potential. Hanagan is a  West Point Academy graduate and retired Army Colonel who has lived all over the world, but chose Custer to live out her retirement years in.

10 years ago, 2014 — Isaac Parsons was among the new teachers for the Custer School District. Parsons, who was set to teach fifth grade, graduated from Custer High School in 2008 and attended Mount Marty College to play basketball and study athletic training. After transferring to Black Hills State University, Parsons switched his major to biology before settling on elementary education.
