Call of the Week
Tuesday, April 22
9:28 a.m.: A California-plated vehicle raced up behind a deputy traveling on Hwy. 385 in Wind Cave Park. After stopping the vehicle for speeding the deputy found the driver, a 43-year-old California male, had a warrant for his arrest, a suspended driver’s license and no proof of vehicle insurance. The deputy promptly arrested the driver and the moral of this story should be obvious.

Waldrop hosts crime awareness presentation

Hill City’s Pennington County Sheriff’s Office deputy Jim Waldrop will host a presentation on community safety. The event takes place April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Hill City Center.
Topics include general safety and awareness, theft, lost property, traffic complaints and video cameras. Waldrop will also discuss current scams that people in Pennington County need to be made aware. 
“That’s where we’re getting hit the most,” Waldrop said, adding that the elderly are the most vulnerable. 

McVey burn area restoration a hot topic

The McVey Fire, one of the five largest fires recorded in the Black Hills, decimated approximately 21,000 acres of forest outside of Hill City in 1939. The burn area is once again a hot topic.
The U.S. Forest Service launched a restoration project to restore the natural landscape of the McVey burn scar outside of Hill City in 2019. Several forestry and non-forestry groups as well forest product industry leaders have been developing plans to treat the area and manage the vegetation.

Sunday, April 13
1:12 a.m.: A concerned clerk called in from a semi-popular Custer convenience store to report a strange male from out-of-state had been babbling about actor Ben Affleck, calling him “Our Lord and Savior.” The weird guy soon left in a red Ford Explorer and wasn’t seen again.  

Federal conservation funding still in limbo

At least $134 million in federal conservation funds approved by Congress and awarded for conservation-related projects across South Dakota were frozen in the early days of the Trump administration.
A recent court order could put the money back in circulation, but the administration has yet to signal if it will fully comply. U.S. District Judge Mary McElroy of Rhode Island, who was nominated by President Donald Trump in 2019 during his first term in office, ordered the administration to release the funding last week.

Custer, Hermosa egg hunts Saturday

Children on both sides of Custer County will have an opportunity to do some pre-Easter egg hunting, as hunts are scheduled for both Custer and Hermosa this Saturday.
In Custer, children up to 8 years old are encouraged to come to Harbach Park for Custer’s annual hunt, which will start promptly at 9 a.m.
Sponsored by Custer YMCA, Custer VFW Post No. 3442, Begging Burro Mexican Bistro, Southern Hills Title Company and Mt. Rushmore Brewing Co., this event will also feature a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny.
