Native Americans Day in South Dakota

Today (Oct. 13) is Native Americans’ Day in South Dakota, which is described in state law as a legal holiday “dedicated to the remembrance of the great Native American leaders who contributed so much to the history of our state.”
Gov. George S. Mickelson and the Legislature created the annual holiday in 1990. They chose the second Monday in October, which is federally designated as Columbus Day. The effort was part of a broader Year of Reconciliation proclaimed by Mickelson at the urging of Native American newspaper publisher Tim Giago.

Creating a haven for the hurting

Grief is a unique battle. It affects people in different ways and at different times. For some, it is readily apparent, and for others it is a quiet struggle. Although the pain eases in time, the grief is something many people carry for life, especially families who have lost children. 
Custer residents Wayne and Cindy Anderson know this firsthand. Their youngest son Jacob, or Jake, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease in 2004. After complications of chemotherapy, he passed on into Heaven in 2005 at the age of 23. That was 20 years ago.

11:21 a.m.: A vagrant was reportedly sleeping on a bench in front of a restaurant on Custer’s north Fifth Street. A deputy went there and asked the hobo to move on, which he did.
