Garden club tour set for July 28

Custer Mile High Garden Club (GC) will host the 18th Annual Avis Hespen Memorial Garden Tour from 1-3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 28. Hespen and her sister, Caroline Hatton, were founding members of the local GC in January 1996. The two shared garden witticisms, sound gardening practices, seeds, bulbs and cuttings quite liberally.
Hespen would say, “I like any color, as long as it’s red!” Red-clad GC members welcome visitors to each garden and will answer your questions.

9:12 p.m.: A shirtless male was reportedly running after a herd of bison and yelling on the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park. The reporting person wanted to know if this was a normal occurrence there. We wanted to tell her it wasn’t, but we didn’t want to lie…. 

Carder, Studt, Schramm will reign

Smiling and waving from convertibles as they float along the parade route, and from the carnival to the gold panner races, Gold Discovery Days royalty are always there and in on the fun as the official faces of the celebration. The 2024  royalty (Chloe Carder, Abby Studt and Taylee Schramm) are no exception and are ready for their reign to begin.
This year’s Gold Discovery Days Queen is 2024 Custer High School graduate Chloe Carder.
Carder moved to Custer when she was young and has “enjoyed every single second.”

Youngs are parade marshals

When it comes to Gold Discovery Days royalty and dignitaries per capita, the Young family stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Three Young siblings—Kathy, Christy  and Tracy—were all Gold Discovery Days queens at one point.
Now, their parents, Bill and Linda Young, can add Gold Discovery Days parade marshals to their list of accolades.
The Youngs were named the marshals at the most recent Gold Discovery Days Chamber of Commerce Spring Fling, with Linda Young saying they were both surprised by the honor.

Down Memory Lane July 17

10 years ago, 2014 — DaAnn Strawn-Piglowski was the 1,000th person to “like” the Custer County Chronicle’s Facebook page. Since she was the 1,000th like, Strawn-Piglowski received a free year’s subscription to the paper. Strawn-Piglowski has been a reader of the Chronicle for a number of years, and even subscribed to the paper before she moved to rural Custer from Missouri...For the second time in three months, the City of Custer was in search of someone to lead its planning department.

Mical Grace sets stage dream in motion

Recent Custer High School graduate Mical Grace is fresh off his run in the Black Hills Playhouse’s  (BHP) production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” In it he played Prince Eric, with the last performance taking place last Sunday. But for those still eager to catch Grace on stage, he’ll be performing in the ensemble in the Playhouse’s next show “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.”

6:51 p.m.: A 55-year-old Keystone male was arrested for DUI at the sheriff’s office in Custer after he showed up drunk for his 24/7 Sobriety Program appointment. The moral of this story is obvious.

10 years ago, 2014 — It’s not every day TripAdvisor  — or its users — names you the number one best burger in the United States, but that’s what just happened to Claude and Christie Smith, owners of Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. TripAdvisor made the announcement July 1 and word quickly spread. “We were shocked; we had no idea. My heart skipped a beat and then I almost cried,” owner Christie Smith said...The weekend of fun came to an end when Firefall performed at Pageant Hill.
