Custer High School’s cross country teams once again brought home trophies from the State A Cross County Championships in Sioux Falls on Saturday. The girls team placed three runners in the top 15 to clinch the top spot in the 15-team field from across the state and the boys team was runner-up behind favorite Sioux Falls Christian (SFC). Custer also received the Combined Team Champions plaque awarded by the South Dakota Cross Country and Track & Field Coaches Association.  

Football falls by three in last game

The final home game of the season for the Custer High School football team turned out to be by far the most thrilling of all the team’s home contests, as the Wildcats and visiting Chamberlain traded leads and big plays in what ended up being a 29-26 Cub win when the clock hit all zeroes.
Custer head coach Dave Williams said coming into the game he wasn’t sure what to expect, although he knew the two teams, both of which entered the game with identical 1-7 records, appeared to be evenly matched and had played like opponents to similar outcomes.

Wildcats win one, lose one last week

As the end of the regular season nears, the Custer Wildcat volleyball team added a game to the win column and tossed another one into the loss bin last week.
The win came on Saturday in a road game against the Red Cloud Lady Crusaders at Pine Ridge. The match, which had been rescheduled from earlier due to bad weather, resulted in a hard-fought win for the Wildcats in five sets.

Cheer team finishes 13th at state

The Custer competitive cheer team overcame injuries and illness and even a week-long sickness in its head coach to compete at the State A Cheer and Dance Competition at Brandon. The contest was held last Friday and Saturday at Brandon Valley High School and the small group cheer portion of the contest was won by Deubrook Area with 209 points.
The Custer team came in 13th with 154 points, beating out three other schools in the field of 16.

Wildcats pick up first win

In a season marked by youth, low numbers and some lopsided scores, the work of the Custer High School football team finally paid off last Friday evening in Martin.
The Wildcats used stout defense and a strong running attack to grab a 24-0 lead on the way to a 24-6 win and a sigh of relief from both players and coaches.
“Winning was great for us. Not really just the win itself, the idea of them getting a win under their belt is a great thing as a motivator,’ head coach Dave Williams said. “Hopefully it motivates them to get better in everything we do.”

Custer sweeps Region 5A championships

The Custer varsity girls cross country team placed three runners in the top five and the boys team placed four in the top 10 to win the Region 5A championship and secure their berth at the state cross country meet in Sioux Falls this Saturday. The region meet, which was originally scheduled for Custer on Thursday, was moved to Hart Ranch near Rapid City due to Tuesday’s snowstorm which dropped several inches of heavy, wet snow on Rocky Knolls Golf Course.

Cheer team heads for state meet

The Custer High School competitive cheer team competed in the Black Hills Conference meet held in Spearfish Thursday but had to go without its head coach. Sheri Deatherage was home  sick so football cheerleading coach Cheri Block took the team to the competition.
Sturgis won the cheer portion of the meet with a score of 123.5 but no other team scores or placings were available at press time.
Deatherage is expected to be back in action for the state finals this Friday at Brandon Valley High School in Brandon.

’Cats fall to Cavs but battle better

Even in a second loss of the season to St. Thomas More of Rapid City on Thursday night, the Custer girls volleyball team showed its improvement since taking second place at the Lakota Nations Invitational recently.
That first meeting of the season between the Wildcats and Cavaliers on Sept. 14 “was not pretty at all,” according to head coach Jill Hohn. The ‛Cats got buried in straight sets in the game at the Armory, losing the final set by 16 points.
“I was pleased with how the girls were able to stay with them,” said Hohn of Thursday’s away game.

Volleyball team focused on having fun

The Hill City Rangers Volleyball team is coming off back-to-back wins at home last week. With a 18-5 record the team continues to “focus on having fun,” according to team captain Abby Siemonsma.
“We play to the best of our abilities, remembering that not everyone gets a chance to play,” said Siemonsma. 
The team has two matches this week, both against teams they have defeated early in the season. On Monday they play at home taking on the 9-14 Red Cloud Lady Crusaders before traveling to Custer on Tuesday to take on the Wildcats. 

Football season ends

The football season has ended for the Hill City Rangers. The team lost to its last opponent on Friday Tripp-Delmont-Armour-Andes Central-Dakota Christian by a score of 66-6.
The Rangers had an overall 1-7 record for the season. The team forfeited its second game of the season due to injuries, struggling to keep players on the field. Their only win came against Lakota Tech in early October.
