The Custer High School Wildcat boys wrestling team competed in the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza tournament over the past weekend, taking third place as a team. Many individuals also placed well, and the team won each of their duals in the East-west duals with Miller-Highmore-Harrold, Bennett County and Lyman.
Head coach Jared Webster was disappointed with some injuries on the team, but said it gave younger wrestlers good experience.
The Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team squeezed in another tournament before Christmas at the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza Dec. 20-21.
For the Ranger girls, Daisy Munoz competed Dec. 20 in the 152 weight class, went 9-4 and scored 16 team points. Coming in third place, Munoz was the only Ranger to place in Hot Springs.
The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team rolled past New Underwood defeating them easily with a score of 69-42.
This leaves the Rangers undefeated at 3-0 for the season.
Head coach Laramie Harvey said the boys won despite not coming ready to play and coming in overconfident. He said the team did a better job playing as a team in the second half, which helped to lead to the win.
For their second tournament of the season the Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team headed to Gordon, Nebraska, for the Gordon-Rushville (Neb.) Boys and Girls Invitational Dec. 14.
Of the tournament, head coach Josh Robison said, “I think it was a good developmental one, and they got to see a good level of wrestling.”
Wrestling for the Ranger boys, Cory Ronish competed in the 126 weight class, placed sixth and scored 11 team points.
Chants of defense could be heard throughout Gins Gym Saturday, Dec. 14 when the Hill City Rangers boys basketball team took on Mahpíya Lúta. The Rangers showed hustle and strong defense and that paid off. The boys won their home opener 58-45 to go 2-0 on the season. The Rangers started the season with a 71-64 win over Kadoka area.
What a difference a half makes.
Plagued by poor shooting, turnovers and shoddy defense, the Custer High School boys basketball team went into the halftime break of its season-opening game against Sturgis last Friday down 34-26.
The second half was an entirely different story, however, as the Wildcats outscored the visiting Scoopers 45-20 in that half on the way to a 71-54 win.
Poor shooting—especially from the free throw line but also from the field—was among the biggest culprits in the Custer High School girls basketball team’s season-opening loss last Friday in the Armory as the Wildcats fell to the Sturgis Scoopers 52-34. The Wildcats shot 27 percent from the field for the game, and made only seven of 22 free throw attempts, good for only 31 percent.
The Wildcat girls wrestling team placed ninth at the Rapid City Invite, a large tournament that brings teams from across South Dakota and beyond for a very competitive day of wrestling.
“I thought the girls wrestled really well. There’s some good girls, and we stacked up pretty much were I thought we should with them,” said coach Clayton Sander.
Once again the Custer boys wrestling team has won the home Bill Young Invitational Wrestling Tournament, and several on the team took spots on the podium.
With a combined 192.5 points, Custer won the tournament, ahead of Sturgis with 187 and Belle Fourche with 183.
“I didn’t think we would [win] this year because we had a lot of voids and we even pulled Riley [Scott] out of the tournament and that’s a 30-point getter. Pulling that off without him is pretty good,” said head coach Jared Webster.
