Ranger boys lose two at home, win road game

After a pair of back-to- back losses the Hill City Rangers boys basketball team finished with a win against Philip on the road.
The contest between the Hill City Rangers and the Rapid City Christian Comets (8-0) Jan. 7 ended with the Rangers falling 77-54. The rangers followed up this loss with another to the Spearfish Spartans (7-0) Jan. 9 by a score of 57-49.
Both losses were at home.

After a break for Christmas the Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team hit the mats again with two different tournaments.
On Dec. 30 the Ranger boys competed at the Harding County High School Wrestling Invitational in Buffalo.
“They really came out ready to go. It was a competitive tournament,” said head coach Josh Robison. “I think our boys did a really good job at being ready to wrestle.”
Cory Ronish competed in the 126 weight class and scored seven team points.

The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season losing to West Central Jan 3. The boys  are now 3-1.
Both teams were undefeated going into the game, but the Trojans had the advantage of being at home. They also had a significant height advantage over the Rangers.
Rangers Head Coach Laramie Harvey said it was the Trojans’  physicality that gave them the advantage over Hill City.  

Girl wrestlers sixth in Spearfish

The Custer High School Wildcat girls wrestling team competed in the Spearfish Girls Invitational this past Saturday and placed sixth out of 12 teams.
“It was a little rough. We had a couple champions and some girls who lost some close matches and shouldn’t have, but for the most part I think we did OK,” said coach Clayton Sander.

Boys place fourth at Harding County

Coming off a short break for the holidays, the Custer High School boys wrestling team placed fourth at the Harding County Invitational Dec. 30. The team finished with 138.5 points, behind Bowman County-Beach’s (N.D.) 143 points, Belle Fourche with 158 and champions Sturgis Brown with 208.5.
“It went pretty well. A lot of kids got quite a few matches over break which was nice, keeping them in shape,” said head coach Jared Webster.
Cole Scott wrestled at 106 pounds. He did not place but scored eight points with two pins early in the tournament.

Larsen posts quadruple-double in Wildcat loss

Senior guard Jojo Larsen achieved one of the rarest stat lines in basketball last Saturday in Custer’s 64-58 loss to Tiospaye Topa at the America’s Hometown Classic in Madison—a quadruple double.
What is a quadruple-double?
When a player reaches double figures in four of the five statistical categories — points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks — he or she has achieved a quadruple-double.
In Larsen’s case, she finished the game with 13 points, 13 steals, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. For good measure, the 5-4 Larsen blocked a pair of Thunderhawk shots.

East River trip yields a pair of wins for Wildcats

“It’s been a long, long time since Custer has headed East River and came back with two wins.”
Those were the words of Custer High School boys basketball team head coach Paul Kelley following his team doing just that—winning two games east of the Missouri River—last weekend as the ’Cats cruised to any easy win over Sioux Valley in Volga and won a battle over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (TMB), Minn. at the America’s Hometown Classic in Madison.

Girls win one, drop three at LNI

It was a rough weekend at the office for the Custer High School girls basketball team last weekend at the Lakota Nation Invitational. After starting the tournament off with a big win over Todd County the Wildcats lost three straight, including a 43-38 loss to McLaughlin last Saturday afternoon in the Ice Arena of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

In the semifinals of the Lakota Nation Invitation last Friday evening in Rapid City, the Custer High School boys basketball team battled illness and poor shooting, scoring only 36 points in a loss to Pine Ridge.
One day later, the Wildcats had surpassed that point total 13 minutes into their game.
Leading by 27 points from Kyle Virtue and an outstanding defensive effort, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 56-23 win over Lakota Tech, a win that secured third place at the tournament, Custer’s best finish in over a decade.

Girls second at holiday extravaganza

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza tournament in Hot Springs over the past weekend, and mustered a second place finish as a team. Individually, many wrestlers did quite well, too.
“The competition was a little bit weaker this year there in my opinion, but there was some schools that we normally don’t see. We had two champions, Tiara and Jessica, and I thought they wrestled really well,” said coach Clayton Sander.
Keira Thorp, wrestling at 100 pounds,  placed second and scored 16 team points.
