Soccer team routed in season finale

Heading into last Thursday’s game against Belle Fourche, the Custer High School soccer team needed a win over the Broncs to secure a win in the Class A playoff brackert.
About 30 minutes into the match, it became apparent that wasn’t going to happen.
The Broncs scored early and often in a 8-1 rout, dashing the Wildcats’ playoff hopes and ending the team’s season with a record of 2-8-2.

Volleyball has disappointing week

It was a disappointing week for the Custer High School volleyball team as it faced losses to Spearfish during last Thursday’s match and then another string of losses into the weekend as it competed in the Belle Fourche Invitational. The team remains optimisic, however, heading into a brand new week with fresh match-ups.
Spearfish got its 11th straight win as it beat Custer Thursday in straight sets 25-13, 25-16, 25-16.

Golf team qualifies for state meet

The Custer High School golf team is state bound next week by virtue of placing second in the Region 4A meet held Monday morning at Rocky Knolls Golf Course in Custer.
Custer finished with a team total of 64 over par, a distant second to St. Thomas More, which placed first at 28 over.

Runners get first look at state course

The Custer High School boys and girls cross country teams competed in the crowded Rapid City Invite at Hart Ranch last Friday and got their first look at the course they will be coming back to for both the region and state meets. For that reason, over 30 teams came from all over the state to get familiar with the terrain. Many of those teams also came from out-of-state to run against the strong competition.

The Hill City Rangers once again had a week of wins on the volleyball court.
The girls began the week drilling the Golddiggers of Lead-Deadwood in three games (25-12, 25-8, 25-15) before hosing the Irrigators of Newell (25-15, 25-10, 25-7).

Ranger runners back in action in Rapid City

After a two-week break to focus on consistent training without the pressure of racing, the Hill City High School Ranger cross country team took on the Rapid City Area Schools High School Invitational Cross Country Meet Sept. 27. 
Head coach Joe Noyes said this was the Rangers’ first time racing at what will be the state course Oct. 26 so it was a good opportunity. He can tell the athletes are tired from training but said that is normal for this time of year. 

Rangers come out and play, now 5-1 for season

Rangers fans are witnessing one of the best football seasons in recent history. The Rangers are now 5-1 on the season after a win against Bennett County last Friday.
Coach Brett Eckert credits the boys of Bennett County for keeping it “interesting,” adding, “we knew they had a lot of athletes that are really skilled and if you let them start rolling then they will be harder to stop.”

One-off outing for Ranger golf team

The Ranger Boys Golf team competed in the Black Hills Conference golf tournament at the Tomahawk Golf Course in Deadwood Tuesday, Sept. 24.  Most of the Black Hills Conference schools are Class A or AA in boys golf and those classes play in the fall. The Rangers are a Class B team and have their season in the spring but are still  invited to the tournament since they are a Black Hills Conference school. 

Boys first, girls third at home meet

The Custer High School cross country team had double duty this week as it raced in its home meet in Custer on Thursday before trekking East River to race in Huron on Saturday.
Over in Huron, the boys team came away with third place in the crowded competion, beat out only by larger AA schools.
“They placed third overall which is kind of a big deal because those are AA schools,” said head coach Karen Karim.

Soccer team struggles to 0-3 week

On Aug. 29, a five-goal game by Xander Dinius propelled the Custer High School soccer team to a 6-2 win over the Hot Springs Bison.
Less than a month later the Wildcats offense was shut down entirely by the Bison in a 1-0 Hot Springs win Sept. 17, which was followed by two more losses over the weekend to Groton (5-1) and James Valley Christian (5-0) that have sent the Wildcats to a record of 2-5-2 and on the outside looking in of the Class A playoff picture.
