Custer School District welcomes new teachers

Students in Custer and Hermosa are returning to school Wednesday, Aug. 24, and joining them are nine certified teachers instructing for the first time with Custer School District.
Most of this new teaching staff isn’t new to Custer, nor the Black Hills. New special education (SPED) teacher Shayna Kintigh graduated from Custer High School and will be starting her teaching career as Hermosa’s K-3 SPED teacher this year.

Host familes sought for exchange students

Arengo attends Army Airborne School

U.S. Army Corporal Jericho L. Arengo, a 2017 Custer High School graduate, recently traveled to Ft. Benning, Ga., from his post at Ft. Bragg, N.C. to attend the U.S. Army’s Airborne School.
The school, also known as “Jump School,” consists of three weeks of intense training beginning with “Ground Week,” where prospective paratroopers learn the basics of the US Army’s T-10D and T-11 parachutes, how to land properly and general jump procedures.

Custer CAP named top state squadron

Crazy Horse Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol of Custer was named South Dakota Squadron of the Year at the 2022 South Dakota Wing Conference.  The award recognizes holistic support for the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) missions within the state.
“Crazy Horse Composite Squadron received this award because of the broad support members give to the programs of CAP,” said Col. Michael Marek, CAP commander for the South Dakota Wing. “They are professional, enthusiastic, and highly respected in our South Dakota Civil Air Patrol family.”

Preble to be at youth leadership forum

This summer Marika Preble, a junior at Custer High School, will join high school students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, NYLF: National Security in Washington, D.C. in July.
NYLF is one of the Envision by World Strides family of programs (envisionexperience.com) that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.

Pops on the Green May 5

Pops on the Green is coming to Hill City Thursday, May 5.  
According to Hill City School District band director Colton  Schaefer, it is a fun afternoon that showcases all levels of the  school band program.
“Everything from our beginners to kids about to head off to college” are featured in one special evening, Schaefer said.
The evening is also a chance to support the band program. The fundraising  goes entirely to scholarships for  students to attend Band Camp.

SCRUBS Camp held

After several years, the one-day Custer SCRUBS Camp continues to give high school students interested in medical careers a chance to learn first hand what those careers entail.
This year’s camp was held on Saturday, March 19, at Custer High School.
The teaching stations change each year of the program and this year’s experiences included live, hands-on stations for suturing and stitching, stopping the bleed and learning about chest tubes in nursing. Other stations focused on physical therapy, speech pathology, radiology and a lab with blood typing and immune system.

‘Let’s Talk About ADHD’ March 31

“Let’s Talk About ADHD,” the senior project of Eva Studt, will take place Thursday, March 31 at the Custer Jr./Sr. High School Theatre.
Those who attend will gain a better understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and what to do about it to benefit you and your children or students.
Guest speaker will be psychologist Mark Perrenoud, and his presentation will be followed by a question and answer time.
The event begins at 7 p.m. and open to the public.

First aid training to be offered

Minutes may mean the difference between life and death for someone suffering a medical emergency. With that in mind, a Custer High School senior is organizing a first aid, CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) course for the public this weekend.
Czech Republic foreign exchange student Adela Marakova is offering the course this Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Custer Ambulance headquarters at 1105 Montgomery Street. It will instruct participants in basic first aid, how to correctly administer CPR and how to use an AED. The cost to each participant is $25.

Christmas at the curb

­­­­­­­Three year old Brixton Miner of Custer has had a fascination with garbage trucks practically since he could walk. He has several garbage truck toys which are his favorites and he and his little brother Bridger look forward to the arrival of the garbage truck at their home every week.   
“He’s always looked forward to seeing the garbage man on Mondays,” said his mother Michaela, noting that it makes his day to watch the garbage can being dumped into the big truck.
