Bill Scott was born in Clemetson, Minn., Aug. 26, 1943. He was the son of the late Clarence and Nora Scott, and had three brothers whom he cherished and loved immensely: Robert (Nancy) of Bonesteel, Henry (Rose) of Norfolk, Neb., Kenneth (Lola) of Wisconsin.

Cynthia Smith

Cynthia Mae Smith was born July 31, 1966, in Rapid City, S.D., to Ronald E. Wheeler and Deloris J. Tisler (Nelson).   
Cynthia grew up in Custer, S.D., graduated high school in 1984 and married Darcy D. Smith Feb. 8, 1986.
She was an avid cook  and became a manager at Pizza Hut, and later, manager at Big D. She had a love for horses and reading romantic novels. She put a smile on all who talked to her. She enjoyed her customers as well.
Cynthia passed away Oct. 28, 2020, in Rapid City at a hospice house care facility. She was 54.

LuAnn Newberg

LuAnn Marie (Hylle) Newberg was born Oct. 30, 1941, to David and Dolores Hylle of Miller, S.D.
LuAnn, the oldest of seven children, grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the small town of Custer. She joked that she got to play on Mount Rushmore, race spike-tired cars on frozen lakes, milk rattlesnake venom and was proud to say she even got to babysit for the creator of the Crazy Horse Memorial.  

Rachel Brickey

Rachel Marie Brickey was born in 1975 on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska and honed an appreciation for nature through hiking, camping and canoeing with her family.
She loved animals and along with raising an assortment of dogs and cats, also cared for a goat and a horse in her youth.  Exploring a great many national parks on summer vacations and several trips to Hawaii developed her sense of adventure.

Forrest O’Brien

Forrest O’Brien was born in Downey, Calif., July 23, 1929, to Frankie (Southmaid) and William O’Brien. At age 2 the family packed up and moved to western South Dakota  to settle on an acreage inherited by Frankie in the Nisland area where his first experience with snow left a lasting impression on his bare feet!

Robert Stewart

Robert “Bob” Clair Stewart was born Oct. 15, 1930, in Artesian, S.D., to Rush and Emma (Winsel) Stewart. 
Bob proudly served in the U.S. Marines until his honorable discharge in 1952. Bob worked for North Western Public Service for 41 years until his retirement in 1995, starting as a serviceman and ending as the director of consumer services of the NWPS Redfield Division.
Bob, of Custer, S.D., passed away Oct. 22, 2020, at his residence in Custer. He was 90.
He was preceded in death by his daughter and son in law,  Pam and Jerry Ortman.

James Hansen

James “Jim” R. Hansen was born March 17, 1947, in Yankton, S.D., to Ronald and Eldora (Huber) Hansen.  
He attended high school in Freeman, S.D. Jim was always well-liked and a joy to be around. He was crowned homecoming king and was on the Freeman football team.

Everett Redden

Everett Lyle Redden was born April 30, 1951, in Pierre, S.D., to Everett Virgil and Arlita (Mackey) Redden. He graduated from Hill City (S.D.) High School and joined the United States National Guard.  Everett worked for Wades Gold Mill and the Burlington Northern Railroad.
Everett will be remembered as a caring father, husband, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend and cast iron chef. He enjoyed caring for family, cooking, hunting and hosting family reunions. Everett was a member of the Pringle Poacher’s Society.

Leila Grace Corkle

Leila  Grace (Palmer) Corkle, 92, passed away Oct. 2.  She was born Oct. 25, 1927 near Franklin, Neb., to Earl Palmer and Grace (Van Camp) Palmer.

She graduated from Elm Creek, Neb., High School in 1944. On May 29, 1945 she married Kenneth Pease, U.S. Navy. They had three children, Lloyd, Bryce and Roberta (Bobbi) Pease Olson. She and Kenneth were married 53 years.

On Sept. 1, 2000 she married Robert Corkle.  They were married 20 years.

Doris Lilja

Doris Ferg (Stidham) Lilja was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Iona, S.D., to Theodore and Pearle Nelson. She grew up on a farm there and graduated from Gregory (S.D.) High School in 1943.
She then went to Vancouver, Wash., to babysit her niece while her sister worked in the Kaiser shipyard. Later Doris also went to work in the same shipyard, as a welder, from May 1944 to October 1945, when the war was over.
