Warners return to the west

Although he grew up in Montana and spent the last five years serving as a missionary in Spain, Custer’s newest pastor says the Black Hills feel like home. Pastor David Warner was installed as the minister of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Custer and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Hill City Jan. 10.

Warner and his wife, Shelee, say they are glad to return to parish life after their busy years in Europe serving with Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) International Missions. They are also glad to be close to their son and daughter-in-law and two grandchildren in Rapid City.

Chili draws crowd

A good time was reported to be had by all at last Saturday’s Polar Bear Chili Cook-Off in Hill City.

The cook-off, sponsored by Tin City Masonic Lodge #112, was postponed two weeks due to cold weather on the date it was supposed to be held.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Ranae Schrier, who was serving up her red chili. “It’s a great community event.”

What’s happening in Keystone?

Skating is back at the Keystone Community Center.

Two nights are planned, March 5 and 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

It costs $3 to skate and $2 for rentals. The proceeds go to cleaning and refurbishing the floor after the event.

Concessions will be available, as well.

The Spring Fling vendor fair takes place on April 17 at the Keystone Community Center.

Vendors of all types, food, makeup, crafts, and more are welcome to reserve a table. The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Local businesses receive state tourism designation

Two Hill City businesses and one Keystone business were recognized for outstanding customer service recently by receiving the South Dakota Great Place designation.

Prairie Berry and Miner Brewery as well as Pine Rest Cabins of Hill City and Big Thunder Gold Mine in Keystone received the designation.

“I don’t know how many years in a row now we’ve received it,” said Jan Johnson, co-owner of Pine Rest Cabins. “We started fairly soon with the program after they initiated it with the tourism department. ...We have maintained it every year since.”

New format for Open Stage

The Valentine’s Day edition of the Hill City Arts Council Open Stage night drew a large crowd to the High Country Guest Ranch this past weekend.

The 2021 series of performances, which began in January, has a new updated format with the same welcoming vibe.

Bingo game helps Lions Club and community

About 70 people turned out to the Boys and Girls Club in Hill City for a bingo event benefiting the Lions Club.

The Lions Club is a non-profit service organization dedicated to helping the community via various programs.

“The Lions Club has been around in Hill City for a long time,” said member Jeremy Duprey. “We look to serve the community in ways that we can.”

Duprey explained that the local chapter is part of the International Lions Club, which, according to its website, has over “48,000 Lions Clubs around the world.”
