Hills sees blood need

The Black Hills has an urgent need for Type O blood.

Donations of all blood types are always needed to replenish supply, but Type O blood is the most transfused blood type, with O-negative blood being the universal blood type.

“It’s what ER doctors grab first when there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type,” says Molly Barari, donor recruitment representative with Vitalant.

 The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the blood donation process in multiple ways.

Smokey takes over

Hill City has a new resident, and he’s kind of famous, too.

That’s right. On the corner of Main Street at Dahls Chainsaw Art, a Smokey Bear has been built by a team of carvers.

“It is the Hill City mascot,” said Jordan Dahl, who owns Dahls’ Chainsaw Art. “So we just thought that we would do a Smokey Bear for them.”

The sculpture is sponsored in part by Vic and Sherryl Alexander Enterprises, Iron Horse Properties and the Hill City Super 8 Motel.

Dahl said they wanted to do something large as an attraction, and they decided to go with Smokey.

Lunches return to senior center

The open sign drew about a dozen people for the first post-COVID lunch at the Keystone Senior Center.

The Center stopped doing weekly Friday meals when the pandemic hit, but senior center Board President Jon Veltman thinks “it’s time” to reopen.

“I think we just need to get back to normal,” he said.

The senior center, which is funded through bed, board and booze (BBB) money, needs to promote the town in order to not lose funding.

This is the first step toward a full reopening which will include a host of old and new events

National Day of Prayer is May 6

In February 1952, Rev. Billy Graham stood on the steps of the Capitol building, calling for Congress and President Harry Truman to establish a National Day of Prayer (NDP), and by April of that year, Truman had signed the legislation into public law.

Hill City has been involved in this special day for decades and will follow suit this year on May 6 with a public prayer walk from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., prayer at noon followed by a complimentary lunch at the Little White Church and a potluck supper at 5 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church followed by prayer at 6 p.m.

Chamber events coming up

There are several events coming up that will help the Hill City community.

Prairie Berry has partnered with the Hill City Chamber of Commerce to host a Hill City Community Job Fair.

The fair will be held April 27 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at The Homestead at Prairie Berry. Up to 20 businesses may be featured to discuss their needs with potential candidates.

Businesses can register by calling Amanda at Prairie Berry at 605-574-9628 by April 23. Employee candidates are encouraged to bring resumes and contact information to apply.

Keystone resident honored

The Keystone Senior Center’s Jon Veltman will be honored by the Helpline Center’s Volunteer Connections program.

The Spirit of Volunteerism Awards is through Helpline Center’s Volunteer Connections program,” according to Audrey Nordine, Black Hills program coordinator for the Helpline Center.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic there would be a spring luncheon celebrating volunteers in the Black Hills in several categories.

Chamber awards coming up

The Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce awards are coming up.

The event will be held on May 1 at the Homestead at Prairie Berry and will have five categories: business of the year, employer of the year, employee of the year, Victor Jepsen Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Open Stage wraps up season

The last edition of the 2020-21 Hill City Arts Council’s Open Stage took place this weekend.

The evening began with a brief speech by Hill City mayor Kathy Skorzewski.

“I’d like to congratulate the Arts Council,” she said. “It looks a little different this year. It looks a lot different this year. I see a lot of local faces.”

Skorzewski thanked the Arts Council board for their hard work to “understand who we are in Hill City and what is it that makes us tick. I see an Arts Council now that has attention to what arts really are.”
