Boo Bash, Pumpkin Festival Saturday

For the second year in a row, and in a year which brought much uncertainty, one thing is certain: a family-friendly socially-distanced outdoor community event will be added to the line-up of Hill City’s spooky October festivities —The Hill City Children’s Boo Bash and Pumpkin Festival.

Center to get new fridge

The Keystone Senior Center was awarded a $2,448 grant to purchase a new commercial refrigerator.

The grant is coming from the Pennington County Council on Aging (PCCA). Senior Center Board President Jon Veltman applied for the grant through Dale Householder, who is treasurer of the PCCA.

Halloween is next Saturday, but that doesn’t mean all the fun will be that day.

Here’s a rundown of area Halloween events this year.

Girlfriends Weekend coming up

The eighth annual Girlfriends Weekend rolls into Hill City Nov. 6 and will showcase some of the new food offerings in the area.

Despite the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in Pennington County, organizer Lorena Freis promises a fun “normal” time for all.

“When we first started out we thought we shouldn’t do large groups, things like the fashion show,” Freis said. “We put the word out that we were going to be cautious. But then we began getting cancellations. So we hit the reset button.”

New Christmas event planned

Back in the 1990s, Hill City was named the Christmas Capital of South Dakota.

Since then, Hill City hasn’t been embracing the Christmas spirit the same way, said Hill City mayor Kathy Skorzewski.

So she has a plan to change that, and that plan is the Lane of Lights.

The Lane of Lights would be a drivable experience where people would literally drive down a road with Christmas lights on the sides.

The Lane of Lights would be along Museum Drive starting at its beginning off of Hwy. 385 and ending at Fools Gold Court.

Arts project coming together

The $5,000 grant from the South Dakota Arts Council is starting to take shape in Hill City.

The Black Hills Film Festival received the grant for the purpose of doing a public arts project and filming it for distribution to its streaming channel.

According to a press release by Chris VanNess, executive director of the Black Hills Film Festival, “for the next three months, Hill City art gallery Warrior’s Work is inviting the public to view and take part in the making of a six-foot stained glass project that will reflect the history and essence of ‘The Heart of the Hills.’ ”

Keeping history alive

Two of the Keystone Museum’s most important women have been awarded the West River Historical Society’s Sago Conservation Merit award.

Bonnie Zebroski, the Keystone Area Historical Society (KAHS) board treasurer and Bonita Ley, a retired teacher who began the Living History School program, were nominated for the award.

This is the third year the Sago Award has been given.

According to Joanna Jones of the West River Historical Conference, the award began after Bobbi Sago’s unexpected passing.

Fall into reading at the library

The library’s hours will continue to be Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Curbside service is still available, please 574-4529 for assistance.

The library will be closed Oct. 12.

The library will be hosting the annual Read for the Record Event Oct. 29 at 9:30 a.m. in the Kid’s Annex. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Celebrating 10 years

In a year filled with much uncertainty, it’s good to celebrate the accomplishments of the community.

One such celebration was held on Oct. 3 as the South Dakota State Railroad Museum (SDSRM) celebrated its 10th anniversary with a soiree and a ribbon cutting on its grounds.

“Thank you so much for everyone being here tonight,” said Rick Mills, director of the SDSRM, to the roughly three dozen people gathered on the lawn in front of the museum. “I can’t express our appreciation for everybody who is here tonight.”

Get supercharged with BOLT

With all the challenges of the past six or seven months, many are ready for a recharge, and that is where BOLT comes in. BOLT is a new Bible-based program for children, which also includes a hands-on life skills component each week. The program began on Sept. 23 at 3:15 p.m. at the Little White Church, but all community children grades K-5 are still invited to join in the learning and fun and be on their way to being “supercharged for life.”
