Saturday, April 5
11:50 p.m.: The mysterious wood chopping noises were heard once again at a Homestead Drive trailer park in Custer. A deputy had to dissuade the reporting person from honking his car horn or firing a gun in the air in retaliation. The suspected wood-chopper denied engaging in nocturnal lumberjacking.

5 YEARS AGO, 2020
— During a press conference, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said schools would be closed for the remainder of the academic year. Work would continue much the way it had through online learning. With the cancelation of school came the cancelation of all school-related activities. After Gov. Noem said students would not return to school for the remainder of the academic year, the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) announced that all remaining events had been canceled, as had postponed events from the winter.

10 YEARS AGO, 2015
— Sam Boettcher submitted a photo of a mountain lion that was in the Homestead area of Custer the morning of March 27 at around 9 a.m. Boettcher said the cat walked within 10 feet of his wife, Julie, and stuck around long enough to get its picture taken. Boettcher said he estimated the cat was around 30 or 40 pounds ... Custer High School girls basketball players Tori Glazier, Morgan Parys and Jasmine Cisneros as well as boys basketball players  Joel Thomsen, Sam Mertz and Ryan Jorgensen were named to the All-Black Hills Conference team.

3:31 p.m.: A strange sport utility vehicle with Nebraska plates was causing consternation at a Rose Place residence. Some investigation found the absentee homeowner knew of the vehicle and was alright with it.

— Hill City had a plan in place as to how to handle businesses and COVID-19. At a special Hill City Common Council meeting  March 25, a resolution was passed that required businesses to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. “This serves as a signal that Hill City is serious, and we are being good neighbors with our surrounding communities,” said Kathy Skorzewski, Hill City mayor. “We’re working toward the same thing.”

Hill City serves up Restaurant Week

Hill City Restaurant Week begins April 10. There are nine restaurants participating. Hill City Chamber of Commerce  executive director Erin Loder said that is a strong number, especially “considering we are not quite in our peak season yet.”
Restaurant Week is a way for people to support local restaurants and sample food.
