A promise kept to honor Ski

On the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 3, Carol Dostert kept her promise to Ski.
She owed Ski $565.42, and she intended to pay that debt. And even though Ski’s widow, Iris, had to officially collect the debt, both Iris and Dostert believe Ski knows the debt was paid in full.
Ski, of course is the late Robert “Ski” Kaliszewski, the former Custer mechanic recently mourned by the community upon his passing July 23. Ski was known by the vast majority of the community, not only for his mechanicing prowess, but for the size of his heart.

10 Years ago, 2011 —  Kent Narum, an associate pastor at Custer Lutheran Fellowship, was selected for the 12th class of the National Clergy Renewal Program funded by the Lilly Endowment.

With Veterans Day 2021 upon us, U.S. Army veteran Larry Maciejewski of Custer finds himself grateful for the opportunity to have served his country and also for the opportunities his 30-year military career opened up for him.
Born in Spearfish and raised in Custer, as a high school senior in 1986 Maciejewski was frustrated with small town life.
“I wanted to get out of this small town of Custer,” said Maciejewski.
“I was too tall for this tiny town,” he laughed.

Sheriff's Log Oct. 23-28

Saturday, Oct. 23
11:22 a.m.: A stolen golf cart was reported at a west Custer campground. The theft report was later found to be a big misunderstanding and the cart was safely recovered.
11:38 p.m.: A deputy checked the Custer area for a badly-driven vehicle without any luck.
12:39 p.m.: A deputy dealt with a suspicious person near Cooperative Way. This time the person was cooperative and sent on their way.
12:53 p.m.: A deputy moved a poorly-parked vehicle to a better spot on Custer’s Mount Rushmore Road.

Keystone Residents get fire education

Logan Brown, urban interface specialist with South Dakota Wildland Fire, gave an overview of the Keystone Fire Mitigation Project and the State of South Dakota’s Hazardous Fuels Reduction program. About a dozen people attended the educational event which covered everything from how to protect your home, to how wildfires travel and what is being done by various entities to reduce fuels around Keystone.

Masons honor veterans

The oldest fraternity in the world  held a breakfast on Oct. 30 to honor veterans in Hill City. The Veterans Appreciation Breakfast took place at the Masons’ Tin City Lodge. The breakfast is a way to show appreciation to those who served our country and is just one of the many ways the Freemasons give back to the community.
The Masons is a men’s organization devoted to philanthropy. The charitable organization does a lot to help people in Hill City and the surrounding regions.
