Climbing the Crestone Needle

Well it’s that time of year again. Alpine season.
Honey Badger and I have chosen another “50 classic climb” to do this year, Ellingwood Ledges on Crestone Needle in Colorado. 
My goal is to do five of the 50 classic climbs in my lifetime. 
If successful this will be number three!
In researching this 2000- foot climb I learned more about Albert Ellingwood and his climbing partner, Eleanor Davis. The two were  colleagues at Colorado College and were never romantic. In fact, Ellingwood was married to another gal named Rea.

Greetings! Hope summer is going well for all of you. Marcia and I have been at our lake cabin with grandkids. There is something special about teaching grandkids to fish.
Jonathan, 7, caught his first Northern Pike—off the dock no less. I had him run to the shoreline and reel in from there. God only knows what could happen on the dock with our chocolate lab Mocha dancing around and then trying to lift the Northern out of the water onto the dock! The fish wasn’t big to us (three pounds), but to a 7-year-old, it was huge. Great memories!

Work hasn’t stopped, time to catch up

There has been so much going on since we last touched base. It is policy that the newspapers don’t publish articles from legislators a few weeks prior to the primary election. I totally get that, but the work didn’t stop, and it is time to catch up!  So, let’s get to it!
First of all, thank you for supporting me in the primary election. I have told many of you that there is so much more to be done, not only for District 30, but for South Dakota and I appreciate the opportunity to continue “our” work together in Pierre.

Life lessons learned from painting

Recently someone asked me what I do in my free time. Well, one of the things I have been experimenting with lately is acrylic painting. 
Painting is rather messy. You get paint on your hands, arms and clothes. As a result, it somehow ends up on your desk, wall and the outside of the paint tubes. Then, your brushes get sticky and your pallet gets goopy. Many artists even need reminders that the mug on their desk is filled with brush wash water and not coffee. 

A little angry about the bathroom issue

I had a whole column planned on the lack of safety in Rapid City after learning that the very park I watched the July 4 fireworks on had been the site of a first degree murder just a mere two hours before I got there.
But after last night’s Keystone Town Board meeting I’m too angry to write about Rapid City. I need to address the bathroom issue in Keystone.

Summer vacation is halfway over

July 4 is the unofficial midpoint of summer break (in reality there are 56 days until the first day of school). In the coming weeks parents and students will receive information about supply lists and back to school information. Optimism over perfectionism

The other day someone jokingly asked me if I ever make mistakes. I laughed. I make them all the time. I just try really hard not to. Don’t we all though? Don’t we all fall short sometimes even after working tirelessly to accomplish our goal? It’s simply a truth of life.

Good riddance to Jason Ravnsborg

Jason Ravnsborg is no more.
It took too long but at least the great men and women who represent the people did the right thing in impeaching our attorney general, who if you don’t remember, killed a pedestrian with his vehicle in 2020.
He left the pedestrian lying in a field all night. He also left the scene and returned the next day with a sheriff friend in tow. He plead no contest to the two misdemeanors he was charged with.

Playing tourist in my hometown

I drove behind two cars with Minnesota license plates on the way to Rapid City. They were headed for I-90, most likely on their way home after a vacation. The fun part is I no longer have to follow the same route after too few days in the Hills. Now I get to stay.

Impeachment trial has begun

Greetings! It’s official.  The recount for District 30 Senate race is as follows: Pennington County Monday, June 27 at 9 a.m.; Custer County Monday, June 27 at 2 p.m.; Fall River County Tuesday, June 28 at 9 a.m. All recounts are held at the respective county courthouses with the auditor’s office in charge.  All are open to the public.  
Also, the property tax summer study is having its first meeting at 10 a.m. on June 27 in room 362 in the State Capitol.
