8:02 a.m.: A herd of cows crashed through a fence near Hwy. 385 and into another pasture. The owner was contacted to take responsibility for them.
8:49 a.m.: A car destroyed a deer on Hwy. 89 south of Pringle. No human injuries happened there.
9:24 a.m.: Possible child abuse was investigated in Custer County. The matter was referred to another agency.
2:07 p.m.: Deputies did traffic control for the big Custer High School homecoming parade in downtown Custer. Attendance was great and everyone had a good time.
The eyes have it! As well as the scales and shells, the feathers and fronds that dominate Custer artist Darrell Mohr’s paintings on display at the Custer County Courthouse Art Gallery. Since his youth, Mohr has loved nature, science and the primitive. Add to this love his penchant for vibrant colors in a stylized, “stained glass” format and you have a sense of walking through a cathedral in honor of nature.
Born in Deadwood, Mohr grew up with admiration and respect for nature’s beauty that surrounded him in the Northern Black Hills.
Roy Hendrickson of Custer was inducted into the Legends of South Dakota Country Music (LOSDCMA) Hall of Fame Sunday in Rapid City.
South Dakota has a long history of country music and the LOSDCMA was created to retain and honor the legacy of country music and preserve its history. Country music was played around cattle drives, campfires, on front porches, family gatherings and many other places.
Even as the last critter crossed Wildlife Loop Road into the corral area at Friday’s annual Custer State Park (CSP) Buffalo Roundup, thousands of spectators on the hillsides nearby were starting to pack up their belongings and head back toward their cars to begin making the one- to two-hour trip out of the park.
However, for a small group of Custer families attending the roundup, things were just beginning to shift into second gear for a unique annual tailgating party in the north viewing area.
The new Custer Bark Park and Custer Senior Center benefitted from over 60 volunteers from community businesses and organizations that participated in the Black Hills United Way (UW) Day of Caring on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
UW marketing manager Andrea Amstutz said volunteers worked at four sites in Custer and accomplished a great deal of work on a clear and sunny day perfect for outdoor projects.
Custer High School students and Black Hills Energy employees worked at the dog park building most of the chain link fence and planting trees.
