Following in the tradition of classic network TV sitcoms like “Friends” and “Family Matters,” Custer native and New York City filmmaker Neil Fennell is set to make a television pilot show that will be recorded in front of a live studio audience.
Custer County Search & Rescue (SAR) will hold an open house Nov. 4 from 4-7 p.m. at its new headquarters at 1039 Montgomery St. in Custer. Especially invited is anyone interested in joining the volunteer group.
Visitors will be able to talk with SAR members about the three levels of membership in SAR:
7:18 a.m.: Suspicious vehicles were reported on Freeland Drive. A deputy scoured the area, finding nothing going on.
9:58 a.m.: A deputy handled a report of social-media-driven threats and harassment related to the previous day’s shot dog/ face punch call in Buffalo Gap. Everyone involved was asked to take a breath and step back from the situation…and to take down the offending social media posts.
11:29 a.m.: Another deer paid the price for not looking both ways on Hwy. 385, near the Custer/Pennington County line.
Barry Bowar, new manager at Lynn’s Dakotamart in Custer, comes with 30 years of retail experience on his resume.
Bowar began his new position as manager Oct. 4 after most recently working at the Lynn’s Dakotamart in Sturgis. He began with the company in July as a manager in training. Prior to that he worked almost 30 years at retail locations similar to Lynn’s (grocery stores, liquor stores, etc.) in Wahpeton, N.D., and Bemidji, Minn.

Hardly a day goes by that Geney Ziolkowski doesn’t get asked some form of this question: “Is the Custer Humane Society still around?”
“Just about anybody and everybody” asks the question, Ziolkowski said, adding that many people believe that when she retired as animal control officer years ago, the Custer Humane Society ceased to exist. That didn’t happen, she said.
12:20 p.m.: A tourist from Minnesota racked up some charges after he helped himself to the head and antlers of a dead deer by the side of Hwy. 385 south of Custer and then fled. Deputies and park rangers quickly found the man, along with the severed deer’s head and administered a hefty ticket. The hapless head hacker will have to seek out another wall trophy elsewhere, as the rangers kept this one.
