Wreaths across America Saturday

Custer County will participate in Wreaths Across America this weekend to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve and teach children the value of freedom. Wreaths Across America does this by placing wreaths on veterans’ graves simultaneously across the country. The ceremonies are conducted by local organizations.

Christmas projects seek volunteers

The Custer Ministerial Alliance announces the details of the annual Custer Community Christmas Project, a program whose goal is to bring the community together to experience the spirit of giving and sharing. Saturday, Dec. 21, is the culmination of months of planning and preparation. The distribution of food baskets is from 10 a.m. to noon at The Storehouse and the Select-a-Gift event at 12:30 p.m. that day.  

Flood checks are delivered

The holidays should be a little brighter for 20 Custer flood victim families as the first round of relief checks were delivered by case managers or mailed last week.
Case Management Team leader Pastor Pam Power said payment per case is based on points and receipts received and verified.
“The Case Management Team will continue to gather information for unmet needs including additional receipts,” Power said.

Hermosa School gets green light

In the discussion and planning stages for nearly two years now, the proposed new elementary school for Hermosa has finally received the official go-ahead from the Custer School District Board of Education. At the board’s December meeting held in Hermosa last Thursday evening, the body voted unanimously to move forward with the planned 64,000-square-foot facility which will be built adjacent to the west side of the current K-8 school building. 

Christmas events start this weekend

The holiday season will be in the air this weekend with a variety of activities to get people into the holiday spirit.
The 30th annual Custer Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5:30 p.m. This parade of lights signals the kick-off of the holiday season. The parade will begin at 8th and Mt. Rushmore Road and end at Way Park on 4th and Mt. Rushmore Road. After the parade, Santa will appear at Way Park for the Juanita Fish Memorial Tree-Lighting Ceremony. 

Input needed on Keystone comprehensive plan

Keystone’s next comprehensive plan meeting takes place Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Keystone Community Center.

The public is encouraged to attend to discuss the results of the community survey and offer input about current and future issues impacting Keystone.

1880 Train to take flight

The 1880 Train is about to take off thanks to a new children’s book by Sean Covel.

Covel, famous for his film credits that include the cult classic “Napoleon Dynamite,” is releasing a graphic novel for children entitled “Marlon McDoogle’s Magical Night,” inspired by Meg Warder, president of the Hill City 1880 Train. 

How to stay healthy this flu season

With the official start to winter almost here, it’s time to start thinking about what can be done to stay healthy this flu season.

The Hill City Prevailer News sat down with Dr. Terry Graber, family practice physician in the Hill City Regional Health Medical Clinic to learn more about what can be done to remain healthy.

When doctors discuss the flu, they are talking about influenza, Graber said.

Council approves TIF for affordable housing

The Hill City Common Council met Nov. 25 to discuss approving the tax increment finance (TIF) district to allow for affordable housing to be constructed in Hill City.

Before that, though, the council voted on approving the wages for city administrator Brett McMacken and planning and zoning commission member Connie Wolters.

The vote came after alderman John Johnson moved these items from the consent calendar to have them voted on as separate items.

Transfer site to close Dec. 31

If you’ve got any old junk from a spring cleaning or remodeling project lying around at home, circle Dec. 31 on your calendar.
That is the final day the Sander Sanitation transfer site will be open after the Custer City Council unanimously approved an addendum to its contract with Sander for residential solid waste collection and disposal, an addendum that allows Sander to close the transfer site in exchange for lowering the cost for the city by $1 per residential unit for trash disposal.
