Memorial weekend is a mixed bag

The summer season got its unofficial start over Memorial Day weekend, and with city-imposed restrictions that mirror Centers for Disease Control guidelines still in place, restaurants and visitors were able to dip their toes into the world of commerce that is the new normal, at least for the time being.

Although the city of Custer is still in the midst of ordinances and resolutions that curtail business, more businesses and facilities are opening as the United States trudges through its third month dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the June 1 meeting of the Custer City Council, the city gave its blessing to five more businesses’ requests for modifications in their operations to comply with its COVID-19 ordinance, as well as plans for Custer Community Center gym, city pool, high school graduation ceremony and July 4 fireworks show.

COVID-19 is projected to grow rapidly in our region over the coming weeks, according to Monument Health, whose short-term projections, based on data over the past two weeks and used to calculate the expected growth over the next two weeks, show that in two weeks the number of West River positive COVID-19 cases could grow to 776.

This past weekend — Memorial Day weekend — marked the unofficial start of summer, and visitors were out in full force.

At Mount Rushmore National Memorial on Friday, the monument grounds — while still undergoing renovations — had a steady stream of people coming from all over the county to catch a glimpse of the famous stone faces.

Little is being shared with the public about the return of Independence Day fireworks; however, pyrotechnics experts have completed a site evaluation.

“We have conducted a site survey and were very excited to have a plan that we feel is very responsible to put on a spectacular performance while keeping in mind being sensitive to the environmental aspects involved in the forest and everything that is involved in doing a show at a National Park and a very special memorial here,” said Kevin Gilfillan, General Manager of Pyro Spectaculars, a California based firm.

Life is returning to (somewhat) normal just as the summer season gets here.

There’s a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. Vaccines are being fast-tracked, and much of the country is on a downward trajectory when it comes to cases. Sports are even returning in some places (my beloved Bayern Munich have won their first three games back in the German Bundesliga and remain on the top of the table there). I truly hope — and somewhat believe — that the worst of this, for now, is behind us.

Which brings me to summer.

Chamber looking to drive tourists to Keystone

The Keystone Chamber of Commerce is asking businesses to share their opening dates as they become available.

The chamber is also finishing work on local business maps

In a recent meeting with Evergreen Media, which is handling all marketing plans for the chamber for 2020, the focus was on promoting area businesses.

“We’re actually going to run a chamber ad in the next issue of Impact Magazine,” said owner Rick Denherder. “It’s just promoting all the Keystone businesses that are open and trying to attract the local audience.”
