The Custer High School golf team had a busy opening week of the schedule, competing in both the Northern and Southern Hills on back-to-back days early last week.
On Aug. 20 the Wildcats were team champions at the Hot Springs Invitational, led by Austin Eggers’ 86, which was good for third place. Gunner Prior cracked the top 10 with a sixth-place finish at 92, followed by teammate Ryder Bailey who also shot 92, good for seventh.
Other Wildcat golfers at the meet were Dustyn Fish at 96, Dylan Polzine 99 and Matthew Merrill 104.
The Wildcats were six strokes better as a team than second-place-finishing St. Thomas More, winding up with a score of 366 to More’s 372. Hot Springs finished in fourth at 414.
The team began its season Aug. 19 at Boulder Canyon Country Club for the Sturgis Invitational, where the Wildcats opened their season by placing first as a team with a score of 348.
Fish won the tournament with a score of 83, defeating Eggers, who also shot an 83, by a card playoff. A card playoff winner is determined on who scored the best on the back nine, followed by the players’ last six holes and last three holes, if needed.
Prior was the third Wildcat to crack the top 10 at the meet, finishing seventh with an 88. Other Wildcats to play included Bailey at 94, Polzine at 97 and Matthew Merrill at 108.
