Old Time Country Fourth events start Thursday

The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce invites residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day in the heart of the Black Hills with Custer’s Old Time Country Fourth of July Celebration. This year’s festivities are especially meaningful as communities across the nation commemorate America’s 250th anniversary with a weekend filled with patriotism, family fun, live music, parades and fireworks.
Festivities begin on Thursday, July 2, with a free Patriotic Story Time at 10 a.m. at the 1881 Courthouse Museum.
On Friday, July 3, community members can enjoy several free events, including live music at 6 p.m. at the Kenneth Kuper VFW Post 3442 and Trivia Night at 6 p.m. at The Custer Beacon. At 9 p.m., residents and visitors are invited to gather for the Freedom 250 at Mount Rushmore National Memorial Watch Party at The Custer Beacon, VFW Post 3442 and various other locations throughout Custer.
The biggest day of celebration arrives Saturday, July 4.
The morning begins at 10 a.m. with the Kids’ Parade followed immediately by the Patriots’ Parade through downtown Custer. This year’s Patriots’ Parade will feature veterans, military personnel, first responders and a special display of state flags honoring the unity and spirit of our nation as America marks its 250th year.
Following the parade, everyone is invited to make their way to Patriots Alley on 6th Street to honor and support our veterans while enjoying a complimentary hot dog lunch sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 46. This gathering offers an opportunity to celebrate community, patriotism and those who have served our country.
The community is also invited to attend the Flag Lowering and Raising Ceremonies at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial located at Washington and 5th streets.
Families can then head to Way Park for the free Children’s Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair will feature bounce houses, face painting, games and activities for children of all ages. Visitors can also experience the charm of the Old Time Country Fair at the 1881 Courthouse Museum July 3-4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fair features more than 20 vendors, children’s games, and a variety of family-friendly activities.
As evening approaches, the celebration continues with the Veterans’ Tribute Street Dance featuring the Johnny Lonesome Band from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Washington Street near the Veterans Memorial. Music lovers can also enjoy live music by the Black Hills Allstars from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at The Custer Beacon.
The celebration concludes with one of the region’s most anticipated fireworks displays. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. at Pageant Hill. The show is free and open to the public, and donations are appreciated to help support this beloved community tradition.
