Memorial Day observances set

Custer County’s veterans organizations have set a full schedule of activities in observance of Memorial Day Monday, May 31. The first set of events involve the decorating of veteran graves in Hot Springs, Custer and Hermosa.
On Friday at noon, laying of the M. Shade wreath will take place at Hot Springs Veterans Administration Cemetery. The wreath-laying will be performed by the American Legion Riders of Custer. Grave decorating at Custer Cemetery by American Legion Post No. 46 will commence at 5 p.m. Friday and graves at Hermosa Cemetery will be decorated beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, conducted by Battle Creek Legion Post No. 303.
At 8 a.m. Monday, flags at Custer’s Way Park and Custer Cemetery will be set at half-mast. Those ceremonies will be conducted by Legion Post No. 46 and VFW Post No. 3442, respectively.
Also at 8 a.m. Memorial Day ceremonies will be conducted at Fairburn Cemetery by Hermosa Legion Post No. 303. At 9 a.m. there will be a Memorial Day ceremony at Cold Springs Cemetery south of Custer conducted by the Custer VFW post. At the same time, there will be a ceremony at Hermosa Cemetery under the leadership of the Hermosa Legion post followed by coffee and cookies at the Hermosa Post Home at approximately 9:20 a.m.
Memorial Day ceremonies are set for Pringle Cemetery at 10 a.m. and at Custer Cemetery at 11. Both events will be conducted by the VFW post.
Raising of the colors will take place at noon at Way Park and Custer Cemetery by the Legion and VFW posts.
Retrieval of the wreath at Hot Springs will take place at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, and retrieval of the grave decorations in Custer will take place at 5 p.m. that day.
