Local cowboys, cowgirls compete
The Southern Hills Rowdies and the Custer High School rodeo team hosted the Custer Rowdy Roundup High School Practice Rodeo May 26-27 in Oelrichs.
The reined cow, horse and cutting events were held Sunday morning. Rodeo one was held Sunday afternoon. Rodeo two was held Monday morning following the grand entry that featured the Hot Springs American Legion Color Guard.
Each rodeo paid out award money to the winners in each event. The average winners of both rodeos in each event received a buckle, and the all around winners with the most points between both rodeos received black cinch buckles.
The all-around winners were Gabe Glines of Smithwick for boys and Tava Sexton of Whitewood for girls.
Local average high point buckle winners including Cody Dirkes of Hermosa in the boys cutting; Avari Dorrance of Custer in goat tying; and Leighton Sander of Custer in the bareback.
The South Dakota High School Rodeo Association kicked off its qualifying last weekend with regional rodeos in Wall, Buffalo, Kadoka and Huron.
