Lewis Compton
Lewis Junior Compton was born Sept. 25, 1930, to Lewis and Eva Compton on the head of Spring Creek on a ranch, now known as the Medicine Mountain Boy Scout Camp.
Lewis grew up on his father’s ranch near Moon, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1955, receiving the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and a Bronze Star. He married Charlotte Sutton of Albion, Neb., June 16, 1957.
He worked as a logger then went back to work for the U.S. Forest Service in 1958, retiring after 27 years. He was a member of the Custer (S.D.) Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to hunt and fish and his hobbies included making violins and other wood working.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlotte; all of his siblings; and son-in-law, David Chamberlain.
Lewis is survived by his four children, Lewis (Charlene) Compton of Custer, Kathy Chamberlain of Hill City, S.D., Becky (Vernon) Huber of Huron, S.D., and Jon (Tammy) Compton of Helena, Mont; along with a number of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2, at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Little White Church in Hill City with committal services following at Hill City Cemetery.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
