Janice Winger
Janice Andersen Winger was born to Chris S. and Stella Andersen Oct. 5, 1929.
She graduated from South Dakota State University and attended Black Hills State College. She met her husband while she was teaching in Worland, Wyo. Following her marriage to Edgar Winger in 1954, they went to Peru. Their son Philip was born in Talara, Peru in 1958.
The family moved to Belem, Para, Brazil where Ed taught Brazilian geologists well site geology. Michael was born in Belem in 1960.
After spending several years in South America they returned to the U.S. where Janice taught in Bismarck, N.D., Paoli, Ind., Elkins, W.V. and Casper, Wyo.
In 1981 they moved to the Hill City, S.D., area. She taught piano lessons for 14 years. As a young girl Janice played the piano at the First English Lutheran Church in Badger, S.D., and later in Idledale, Colo. She played for several weddings in South Dakota and Colorado.
Janice was a library volunteer for about 12 years. She loved to play the piano, line dance, read, sew, do crossword puzzles and live in the country.
Janice died March 16, 2022, at Edgewood Assisted Living in Pierre, S.D. She was 92.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, two sisters and one son.
Janice is survived by one son, Michael Winger.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Winger residence, 24125 Goodart Road in Hill City.
