Girls golf qualifies for state meet
The Custer High School girls golf team is state-bound after earning second place in team scores at the region tournament in Hot Springs Monday. The top three teams advance to state, and the standings were St. Thomas More in first with a combined 402 points, Custer in second with 430 and Belle Fourche in third with 455. Rapid City Christian earned fouth with a score of 489.
“It was a good day. We were hoping for better scores, but with the conditions they played in, they did great,” said head coach Haley Uphoff.
The conditions she is referring to are the weather conditions—it rained nearly all day Monday in Hot Springs.
“They were soaked and cold. They really had to be mentally tough,” said Uphoff.
All four golfers for Custer cracked the top 20 places for individual scores. The top Wildcat golfer in the tournament was Jordyn Uphoff, who placed seventh with a scorecard at 101.
Next up for the Wildcats was Quinn Lewison, who came in 12th place after scoring 109.
Also carding 109 was Shauna Zacher, who ultimately finished in 14th place.
Just behind in 15th place was teammate Lauryn Robb, who carded 111 strokes.
Maddie Meyer came in 18th place with a score of 114.
“My top four are all so close. I think its pretty cool as a team to have that,” said Uphoff. Uphoff said the team has a strong mindset rooted in teamwork. Even if one golfer is having a bad day, she says they know they can rely on their teammates. “I know my team can do it,” she says is the attitude.
Next, there may be a state tune-up tournament between now and the state tournament, but Uphoff says nothing is official yet.
In the meantime, the team plans to make trips to practice at Hot Springs, as its greens are comparable to the Baker Crossing course, which is the location for state in Sioux Falls June 3-4.
