Floyd Bonk

Floyd Clifford Bonk, 95, a resident of DuPage Care Center, in Glen Ellyn, Ill., formerly of Custer, S.D., New Hope, Minn., Park Rapids, Minn., and various places in between, died May 16, 2020.

He was born in Phelps, Wis., Aug. 9, 1924, to Dorothy and John Karl (Jack) Bonk. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Ann (Bette) for 53 years, loving father of Jack Bonk and Ginny (Jim) Weiskopf, grandfather of Kelly (Johnny) Eng, Lucas (Jennifer) Bonk, Katherine, Peter, Joshua, Rebecca (Charlie) Gerchman, Thomas, Reuben, Jamie, Jackie, Melissa, Molly, Mathew, Mary, Tytiana, Tinia, Tamira, Anthony Bonk and Benjamin and Zachary Weiskopf. Adored Uncle Dan (Patty) Harsha, Anni (Brad) Olsen and Kay Lyn (Olaf) Netteberg and the late Larry Harsha.

He was a 20-plus-year Army veteran stationed all around the world including Panama, Yokohama, Greenland and U.S. postings. Floyd actually started in the Navy stationed in Bermuda aboard the USS Boxer and USS Charles H. Roan. 

After his service, settling in New Hope, Minn., with his wife and two children, Floyd worked for the Robbinsdale School District until his retirement. During this time, he spent many weekends fishing, hunting and going to the lake.

Floyd and Bette retired to their dream home in Custer. He worked for Flintstone’s Bedrock City driving the Flintstone Mobile. He was very involved in the Shriners, was a 32nd degree Mason and enjoyed retirement.  

Floyd and Bette moved to Brookdale Senior Living in Glen Ellyn in 2008 to be near their daughter. He was involved in the Senior Police Academy, Resident Council and a fixture at Friday night Happy Hour. 

He will be buried at a later date with his wife in Park Rapids, Minn.
