Chronicle to move to north 5th Street

Extra, extra, read all about it—the Custer County Chronicle is on the move.
The Chronicle is set to move to 431 N. 5th Street, just across from Custer Armory and just north of Smyth Automotive. The move comes as a result of the venerable Garlock Building where the Chronicle has been for the past 25 years being sold by Chronicle owner Jerry Lenander to Custer County Candy Company owners Trapper and Mary Lappe.
The Chronicle moved to the Garlock Building in 2001 about a year after the newspaper was purchased by former owners Charley and Norma Najacht. Prior to that, the Chronicle occupied the entirety of the building on the southeast corner of Mt. Rushmore Road and 6th Street. It was June 2001 when the Najachts sold the Chronicle press and moved into the Garlock building.
Mary Lappe said when she and her husband bought the candy store business in 2022, they set a goal to own our own building within five years.
“The Garlock building is the perfect fit for us. We are committed to maintaining the authenticity and integrity of this beautiful, historical piece of Custer,” she said. “We are going to double the size of our current kitchen and we’ll have more floor space as well. We will have lots of outdoor seating, which customers always appreciate.”
Lappe said the goal is to have the candy company open in its new location by Valentine’s Day.
