Walking tacos for a cause

There will be a walking taco fundraiser for Jeff Anderson this Thursday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hill City High School Commons. Cost is $5 per taco.
All proceeds will go to Anderson to help with ongoing medical bills.

Mickelson Trail getting makeover

The Mickelson Trail is getting a huge makeover. Trail surfacing will take place July 12 through Dec. 31 starting at Rochford and working to Custer. The trail will be open and passable, but users may encounter loose material and equipment.
The work is slated to be completed by year’s end, if not sooner.
Trail manager Dana Garry-Reiprich said riders on the Mickelson Trail can help workers by walking their bikes in the vicinity of the signs that say trail maintenance. This will also help them have a better experience on the trail.

Masterson Method taught

As she continues, however, and the Masterson Method begins to take over, Cole’s attitude changes. He lets out a deep sigh. He lowers his head. He begins to close his eyes. He even lets out a soft snort.
The snort is because Cole is a horse, not a human being.

Jeff and Pat Baird started Operation Black Hills Cabin for injured veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars ... Heavy rainstorms in Custer brought flooding back to the forefront  as Dan Trana again approached the commission seeking help with flooding issues along Harbach Lane and the Granite Heights area.

Thursday, Aug. 5
1:34 a.m.: A deputy gave an abandoned person a ride back to their house from a semi-popular Custer convenience store.
4:57 a.m.: A semi-truck struck a large buck deer on Hwy. 79 near Lame Johnny Road. The truck suffered heavy damage, the buck suffered fatal damage.
7:09 a.m.: A missing or stolen bull was reported on Hwy. 40 east of Hermosa. Be on the lookout.
7:34 a.m.: A lost wallet was reported in Custer’s downtown area.
10 a.m.: Scam calls were reported on Lower French Creek Road. No money changed hands.

At a time when they are needed most, South Dakota is facing a shortage of nurses that healthcare professionals worry could negatively affect patient care at hospitals across the state.
The nursing shortage has been ongoing for years but worsened during the pandemic.
High stress, long hours and fear of infection during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused more nurses than usual to leave the field, move to other states or retire early.

Black Hills Hundred returns to Hill City

About 60 cyclists made their way into Hill City this week via the Mickelson Trail. The Black Hills Hundred ride, organized by Pork Belly Ventures, had participants from all over the United States who came to ride in the Black Hills on what is seen by many to be an accessible trail for all.
“It’s pretty special,” says 63-year-old Pat Rainey from Kansas City, Mo., about the Mickelson trail. “Lots of hills if you like the workout but it’s not so steep that it takes out a family.” 

Black Hills 100 is here to stay

In the wake of the Black Hills 100 2021, Version 2.0 bicycle ride that passed through Custer last week, it looks like the 109-mile trek from Deadwood to Edgemont on the Mickelson Trail will definitely become at least an annual event.
As the 63 riders from all over the country were preparing for their overnight stay at French Creek Campground on Wednesday, organizer Pork Belly Ventures co-owner Pete Phillips said a few of the riders are repeats from the inaugural run in July and many said they will return next year and bring others with them.
