No firm date set for permanent Mount Rushmore superintendent

A firm date has not been set on when the permanent superintendent position will be announced at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, according to Maureen McGee-Ballinger, chief of interpretation at the memorial.

In the meantime, Patricia Trap has taken over as interim superintendent for the memorial, it was announced earlier in January, the second interim superintendent the memorial has had since the spring.

Board passes resolution to send to lawmakers

The Hill City School District Board of Education  approved a resolution to send to state legislators regarding capital outlay funding at its most recent meeting.

The South Dakota legislature passed a law that changes capital outlay funding from a mil levy and a maximum taxation of $3 per thousand to a maximum of $2,800. This could cost the Hill City School District $300,000 in lost revenue.

During the signing phase one of the United States-China trade deal Jan. 15, President Donald Trump addressed South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who was attending the signing with Sen. Mike Rounds.

Society audit main focus at meeting

Discussion about an audit of the Keystone Area Historical Society (KAHS) was the main focus of the recent Keystone Town Board meeting.

According to KAHS board president Jon Veltman, “In reference to the audit I got three bids; they’re anywhere from $2,500 to $4,000. Gloria’s (Goth) put hard work into it, so the audit company doesn’t have to spend a lot of time looking through it.”

Email exchange between board, chamber continues

In lieu of an appearance at the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting, the Keystone Chamber of Commerce gave its monthly report via email.

While at least three members of the chamber board were sitting outside the town meeting quarters, none came into the meeting to address the town directly. Instead, they awaited a response to a detailed email sent the day before the town board meeting.

Elementary school gets literacy grant

A grant obtained by Hill City Elementary School will help students remain on top of their academics during the summer.

On Jan. 9 elementary school principal Samantha Weaver was presented a $1,000 grant from Black Hills Read.

“The grant will go toward helping pay teachers for the summer literacy camp,” Weaver said. “It is a one-time grant, and we were lucky enough to get it.”

Hill City Cafe gets to keep its sign

The Hill City Common Council met Monday. Its only scheduled business item was to discuss a nonconforming electronic sign at the Hill City Cafe.

The sign is an electronic reader board sign that was allowed in the Central Business District when it was first put up in 2009.

The discussion was an appeal of a Hill City Planning and Zoning decision that ended in a 2-2 tie meaning the sign must be removed as condition of a building permit for the Cafe.

Sweets to be sold at former post office

The former Keystone Post Office will become an annex of TurtleTown, according to business owner Chris Connelly.

The space will create a “more expanded TurtleTown,” Connelly said.

Connelly anticipates a menu of treats, a full coffee bar and self-serve ice cream in a wide variety of flavors.

A new kitchen will be located in the former post office building. The space will also provide more seating for patrons.

Keystone applies for grant

Keystone has applied for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant.

The grant will be used for mapping the floodway accurately. Current FEMA maps for the town were created in 1974.

Trio of county projects progress

Several projects funded by Pennington County are making progress.

Ron Rossknecht, Pennington County Commissioner for District 1, provided an update to the Prevailer on the Sheridan Lake Road reconstruction, South Rochford Road bridge replacement and South Rochford Road reconstruction.
