In an email sent out to stakeholders within the Hill City School District, superintendent Blake Gardner spelled out the plan for school for the remainder of the year and looking forward.
Since the first call to prayer in 1775 by members of the Continental Congress, asking the people to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, that call has continued to go out throughout our history. In fact, there have been 146 calls by presidents, asking United States citizens to pray.
The Black Hills Film Festival returns this year with a new date.
Unlike previous years when the festival was held in the spring, this year’s film festival comes in February, a move Chris VanNess, film festival executive director, said was to bring in more people.
“Everyone we talked to said this would be better for them because there’s less going on this time of year,” VanNess said.
On Feb. 8, Hill City will play host to a legislative crackerbarrel, Black Hills Classic Wrestling Tournament, Tour de Chocolate and Polar Bear Chili Cook-Off and Open Stage at High Country Guest Ranch.
Starting at 8:30 a.m., the Black Hills’ best wrestlers will meet at Hill City High School forthe Black Hills Classic.
On Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings during the winter, a game is played on the ice by the Hill City Visitor Information Center that has been described by many (tongue-in-cheek) as “ballet on ice.” The game is broomball.
Broomball has been played in Hill City for over 20 years, said Jeff Schlukebier, who helps organize the games and brought the game with him from his homeland of Minnesota to Hill City.
The annual Breakin’ the Winter Blues Chili Cook-Off was held Jan. 18.
Mike Gallucci of Things that Rock organized the event for the first time this year, said the event is a good way to get people into the stores in Hill City.
“We were right on where we were last year attendance-wise,” he said. “We counted 95 ballots for our internal competition that we did, and we collected 92 official ballots.”
