— The 11th annual season of Hill City’s Open Stage began a new era of varied talent at the High Country Guest Ranch’s Dakota Hall on Saturday, Jan. 14. After the sudden closure of the former venue, Chute Rooster Restaurant & Sports Bar, the Hill City Arts Council partnered with High Country to continue the event. The new venue was able to hold nearly double the number of attendees and was more accessible to people with disabilities.

Reflecting on the year that was

“I will see you next year” is one of my favorite dad jokes! As I type that, I obviously make myself chuckle; but more importantly I take a moment to reflect on a truly great year.  
We were once again recognized as being amongst the top schools in South Dakota. Our school board achieved gold level status again. We had great successes in our athletic and fine arts. Our kids learned at a high level, our teachers were rock stars and our parents were extremely supportive!

— Dave Gray was named the Hill City Prevailer’s Citizen of the year. Many described his unbounded passion for his family, his church, youth in the community, the great outdoors and the affairs of the city of Hill City as well as his easy-going and patient nature. From the youth center to the Boys and Girls Club Board and on to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Gray served the community and was later elected to the city council. Even after retirement, Gray remained an active member of the Hill City community.

Happy new year!
The library is excited to announce that we have achieved Exemplary Level in the South Dakota State Library Accreditation Standards. The library will receive our certificate on Feb. 15 in Pierre at a ceremony during Library Legislature Day.

— A bilzzard swept across South Dakota causing winter storm warnings from early Christmas Day into Monday, Dec. 26. The storm included freezing rain, several inches of snow and winds from 30 to 40 mph. The South Dakota Department of Transportation issued a no travel advisory for all roads in the entire western half of South Dakota and closed I-90 from Wyoming border to Vivian. ... As part of the Ranger Field renovation, new concessions, restrooms and storage facilities were built and permanent bleachers were installed.

— The Keystone, Hayward and Hermosa fire departments began combining to form the Battle Creek Fire Protection District. This collaboration was expected to bring quicker response times, lower taxes and eliminate redundancies between the three fire stations ... The Friends of the Hill City Library took a decided step toward growing the Hill City Friends of the Library Fund by signing a quasi-endowed agreement with the Black Hills Area Community Foundation at their annual Christmas Tea.
