5 YEARS AGO, 2019
— Holden Stach, a Hill City High School junior, traveled to New York City to do what most performers can only dream of — play Carnegie Hall. He traveled with his family for a four-day vacation and a chance of a lifetime singing in a chorus of 200 students as part of the 2019 High School Honors Performance Series. The talented singer was originally nominated for the program via his inclusion in the South Dakota All-State Chorus. Through the program Stach was part of the 2018 series, which performed at the Opera House in Sydney, Australia.

— The Hill City Public Library (HCPL) received “Enhanced Library” Accredidation in the Capitol rotunda in Pierre. Hill City was one of 30 out of more than 100 libraries in the state working through the three levels of accredidation. Next, Tammy Alexander, HCPL director, planned to work for three years to achieve the highest level which is “Exemplary Accredidation” ... Sabrina Hedge, a 10th grade student at Hill City High School, received her letterman’s jacket for bowling as part of the Rapid City Flame Special Olympics team.

Traversing the trails of life together

Sometimes you just need to take a hike. That is how Mikal and Colleen Lewis got to know each other. Today they still enjoy hiking together, and they recommend that young couples do it too. 
Mikal grew up in Ohio and moved to the Hills in 1973 shortly after the Rapid City Flood. He worked as a salesman on the road selling caulking, silicone and adhesives and had four children from his “first life.” 

Recycle shoes and make an impact at Granite Sports

Granite Sports is now a local location to recycle unwanted sneakers and shoes. 
Customers will see the prominent Sneaker Impact recycle box towards the back of the store, in the footwear section.
Darcy Ferebee of Granite Sports learned about the recycling opportunity at a trade show in Austin. She saw two booths offering the same opportunities and chose  Sneaker Impact because it accepts all types of shoes for recycling not just sneakers.  “ We have a lot of people buy new pairs of shoes and they leave them here and we just had to throw them away.”

— The Hill City Prevailer News hosted a District 30 legislative crackerbarrel on Saturday, Feb. 9. The event was attended by Reps. Tim Goodwin and Julie Frye-Mueller and Sen. Lance Russell as well as roughly a dozen citizens from the Hill City community. Topics discussed included the potential for a convention of states, school funding, tourism money and gun rights. Perhaps the topic with most discussion was the conversation on school funding.

Chasing a dream: Brady Chase qualifies for Boston Marathon

Not many people can say they qualified for the Boston Marathon. Fewer still can say they qualified for it in their first marathon, but that is exactly what Brady Chase did. 
Chase graduated from Black Hills State University in 2018 and started teaching at Hill City Elementary School immediately after. Currently, he teaches third grade and coaches middle school girls basketball and middle school track. 
“When I started doing the middle school coaching for track, I kind of fell back in love with running,” said Chase.

Margie Neugebauer teaches Grief Recovery Method

In her presentation on the Grief Recovery Method (GRM), Margie Neugebauer taught basic information about grief, explained how to confront unhelpful patterns of grieving, examined beliefs about grief and provided action-oriented tasks on how to let go. The presentation was hosted by Love INC of Hill City and Keystone at Lighthouse Assembly of God church Jan. 30.
