Davis wins BHC crown

Hill City wrestling team member Tanner Davis is moving full steam ahead in his quest to bring home a wrestling title.
Competing in the 285 weight class at the Black Hills Conference Tournament at Douglas High School this past week, Davis pinned freshman Matthew Medina at 1:10 to take first place in his weight class. He was also selected Black Hills Classic All Conference.
“It was a super fun day,” Davis said. He wrestled twice and considered the event a “cake walk” with no really challenging matches. 

Rangers boys are bouncing back

At first it appeared the Hill City High School boys basketball team was off to a discouraging start. After all, the first three games against the Red Cloud Crusaders, the New Underwood Tigers and the Hot Springs Bison were all lost by the Rangers. However, the turn of a new year appears to have brought a new vigor to the team. 
Although they lost a game against the Spearfish Spartans 85-60  Jan. 5, the next day proved a different story. At home in the Gins Gym, the Rangers claimed a win against the Edgemont Moguls 59-41. 

Girls pick up two wins

Basketball season is heating up for the Rangers girls team as they come off of back to back big wins. The team smoked Elkton-Lake Benton in the Dakota State University  Girls Classic by the score of 59-34. Senior Guard Abby Siemonsma was MVP scoring 22 points during the win. Siemonsma also had  three assists, three steals and was 8-18 on field goals. 
The Rangers also defeated Spearfish in a tight, come from behind victory on the road.
“We were down 10 in the fourth quarter and won in overtime,” coach Wade Ginsbach said. 

Davis victorious at Hot Springs meet

The Hill City Rangers Wrestling team had a huge win at the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza. Eli Isakason  placed eighth and scored 10 team points, while Tanner Davis placed first and scored 28 team points. 
It was a great feeling but weird,” Davis said about winning the tournament. “All of these tournaments I’ve walked into I always had the ‘I wish I was on top of that podium’ idea and I never got it.” 
And while the victory was exciting it’s also slightly bittersweet, knowing as he puts it, “I will never walk into the same gym to wrestle again.”

Girls Team to host Spearfish Thursday

The Hill City High School girls basketball team opens the 2022 portion of its season Thursday evening against the Spearfish Spartans (3-2) and enters the game sporting a record of 2-3. 
The Rangers are on a two-game losing streak entering the game, having lost to St. Thomas More 38-49 just before Christmas and Vermillion New Year’s Eve at the Sioux Falls Pentagon. 
Head coach Wade Ginsbach said, “So far we’ve been tested quite a bit. We’ve played some good teams. I think we're figuring it out.”

Winter sports have begun

Winter sports are well under way, with some unusual changes. The boys wrestling team has two members, Tanner Davis and Elijah Isakson. Due to the lack of numbers the boys can only compete in tournaments and travel to Custer to practice with their wrestlers.
“It’s definitely  different, meeting new kids and trying to bond,” said Davis who adds that they are now “super tight” with the Custer wrestlers.
Davis and Isakson are excited about their season and are motivated to get better.

Ranger wrestler Tanner Davis started the 2021-22 wrestling season off on a strong note, finishing second in the 220 pound weight class at the Bill Young Invitational in Custer on Friday. It took only about a minute for Davis to pin his first two opponents in the tourney but he lost to Grey Gilbert of Harding County by a 5-2 decision in the first place match. 

Davis' only teammate this season, 152 pound Eli Isakson, did not place in the season opening tournament.  

Rangers finish sixth at state

In a season that saw them endure playing for three different coaches, player defections and plenty of distractions, the Hill City High School volleyball team put all the noise aside to not only qualify for last weekend’s Class A State Volleyball Tournament but bring home a sixth place trophy in the process.
Saturday the Rangers played Elkton-Lake Benton for the consolation championship in the tournament, falling three games to one.

Rangers advance to state tourney

The Hill City Rangers girls volleyball team keeps advancing, and qualified for the South Dakota Class A State Tournament by virtue of a straight sets win over the Winner Warriors in  SoDak 16 action Nov. 9. The Rangers defeated Winner 25-9, 25-17 and 25-17.
Thursday the team will take on Wagner at 1:45 p.m. in the Summit Arena at the Monument in Rapid City in the first round of state tournament action. The Wagner Red Raiders team is “fairly tall and athletic,” according to Hill City coach Renae Schneider.
