Rangers have a strong start to the 2025 track season

The Hill City Ranger track and field team had great weather for the first track meet of the 2025 season held in Newcastle, Wyo., last Thursday.
“Great day for track and field—75 degrees and no wind in Newcastle,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “The kids took advantage of it. That’s always what we kind of tell them. When you get a good day, just make the most of it because sometimes this time of year, those are few and far between.”

Hill City makes history once again at state tournament

Having already had an unforgettable and historic season and making its first appearance in the state tournament, the Hill City Rangers boys basketball team did it again last weekend inside the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.
In a nail-biter of a game, the boys notched a fourth quarter, double-digit comeback against the Clark-Willow Lake Cyclones, earning their first ever win at a state tournament. That same game pushed them to their 20th win of the season, yet another Hill City basketball record.

The Hill City boys basketball team has made history. 
The Rangers qualified for its first ever state tournament in the school’s history with a win over Cheyenne Eagle Butte in the SoDak 16 March 11.
Playing on neutral ground in Sturgis, the Rangers took on the Braves with everything on the line. The stands were packed as both teams gathered to cheer on their team. Hill City had a huge showing for the event.

It was a packed house at the Hill City Gins Gym for the highly anticipated showdown between the regional number two seed Hill City Rangers and the number three seed, St. Thomas More Cavaliers last Friday night. 
The game was a re-match between the two teams after Hill City beat STM for the first time in 25 years Feb 22. The outcome of the game determined which team would secure a seat in the SoDak 16 and which team would have a season-ender.

Ranger wrestling wraps up season

Hill City junior Daisy Munoz competed at the South Dakota High School Class B Girls State Championships, which took place at The Monument in Rapid City Feb. 27 through March 1. 
Munoz competed in the 145-pound weight class but did not place or score team points. 

Rangers steal victory from ’Cats at the buzzer

It may not have been a Cinderella story, but it was certainly a fairytale ending. 
The Hill City Rangers girls basketball team battled the Custer Wildcats in their first Class A, Region 8 playoff game held Tuesday night in Custer. 
The Wildcats had defeated the Rangers just four days earlier at the Rangers own Gins gym and both teams had a lot on the line going into Tuesday night’s matchup. The outcome would advance the winning team to the second round of playoffs and end the season for the other.  

Daisy Munoz moves on to state tournament

After a hard fought battle, Hill City High School junior Daisy Munoz took third at the South Dakota High School region wrestling tournament at the Ice Arena in Rapid City Feb. 22.

Ranger boys hit hot streak, beat STM, Custer

The Hill City Ranger boys basketball team is making some noise this season and were loud and clear at last Saturday evening’s game at home against the St. Thomas More (STM) Cavaliers.
The game was an intense back-and-forth match-up with several lead-changes and valiant moments. For the first time in 38 matchups, dating back to 2000, the Rangers came out victorious over STM.

Hill City Rangers girls basketball team hosted the Custer Wildcats last Friday night in both teams last game of the regular season.
Custer got off to fast start with 6-0 lead while the Rangers struggled to get into their offense. Lillie Ham put the Rangers on the board, driving the lane for a left-handed layup and drawing the foul but missing the bonus.
Naiya Ginsbach came in clutch with two three-point shots to keep the Rangers in the game while Custer’s Jojo Larsen led the charge for the Wildcat’s with seven points for the quarter ending 16-14.

Rangers battle out end of regular season

Despite missing three of its starting line-up, the Hill City Rangers girls basketball team was able to triumph over the Douglas Patriots Feb. 11.
The Rangers dominated the first quarter with a 19-1 lead over the Patriots, but the tables quickly turned as Douglas made a strong comeback in the second quarter. The Patriots put 17 points on the board while holding the Rangers to only four and trailed by five at the half.
The second half of the game was kept a little tighter with the Rangers hanging onto their lead despite their foul trouble.
