Buffalo to be auctioned

It’s Custer State Park’s Fall Classic Buffalo Auction time again, with it being bumped up from its usual third weekend in November format to this Saturday, Nov. 2.
Kobee Stalder, visitor services program manager for Custer State Park, said the auction was moved ahead because the timing fits better with the annual Buffalo Roundup.
“We can now work the herd shortly after the Roundup and we don’t have to hold the auction animals as long in our corral pasture,” Stalder said.

Fire district possible

In the not-too-distant future, the fire departments in Custer County may all be in a fire district, as funding — and especially volunteers — continue to dwindle. Just how those departments would fit into districts was part of a broader discussion on fire service held at the Oct. 23 meeting of the Custer County Commission.

Morken Springs to be plowed

When the snow gets heavy this winter, residents of Morken Springs Subdivision on Custer Limestone Road won’t have to worry about being stranded miles from town.
That’s because at the Oct. 23 meeting of the Custer County Commission, the commission agreed to allow the residents to pay to have Custer County Highway Dept. — which already plows in the area — to make a run down Custer Limestone Road in their area when time allows and the snow is deep enough to warrant the blades.

Freak wind damages Flora’s roof, siding

Wind gusts estimated as high as 70 to 75 mph Sunday afternoon took the roof off one of Custer’s oldest buildings, leading to the collapse of an awning on the west side of Flora’s Jewelry and Western Wear on Mt. Rushmore Road. Four vehicles parked along the 6th Street side of the building were also damaged when the awning fell on them. The damage reportedly occurred around 5 p.m.

City raises water, wastewater rates

Water and sewer rates will increase slightly in 2020, after the Custer City Council unanimously approved a raise of 3 percent to both at its Oct. 21 meeting. The increases are the typical annual bump that the city passes to avoid larger, more jolting increases every few years.

Chamber hands out 7 awards

It was an evening of celebration last Thursday evening at Sylvan Lake Auditorium as the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual membership banquet at which seven residents were honored for their contributions to the community.

Flood assistance is getting closer

The Custer County Long Term Recovery Group is offering an opportunity to begin assessing needs from Aug. 2 flood damage on Friday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Custer Lutheran Fellowship (12622 US Hwy 16A). 
“This is a day for people in the community who were affected by the Aug. 2 flood to fill out an application and share what damage and needs they have,” said Pastor Pam Power, disaster case management supervisor. “No appointment is necessary. Simply come any time during the Oct. 25  time frame and we will help you fill out forms. 

Walk highlights problem, hope

“We do it for awareness,” said Custer’s Donna Talley, speaking of the annual Walk Against Violence scheduled for Thursday evening in downtown Custer. Talley is the executive director of  Women Escaping A Violent Environment  (W.E.A.V.E) .and has personally seen the impact of domestic violence for many years. 
“Every two hours a woman is killed due to domestic violence,” said Talley. “Over 5 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year.” 

Search for hunter ends successfully

The search for a lost hunter near the Wyoming border on Thursday night was over practically before it began. 
According to Custer County Search and Rescue director Rick March the hunter, reported to be a 72-year-old Alexandria man, was elk hunting with friends when he became disoriented and “wasn’t where he was supposed to be.” 
March says when darkness fell the man didn’t show up at a meeting place and his friends called authorities.
