And we thought last year was a no-brainer for our Citizen of the Year.
Well, yes, it was last year too. Marty and Jen Mechaley were the easy choice for the Custer County Chronicle Citizens of the year for 2022 for all of the work they did in helping daughters (and a niece) of Warren Jeffs escaping the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and move on to productive lives. You all know the story by now.

Some news that we find rather disturbing originated out of Salina, Kansas, this week (what is it with Kansas and newspaper news in 2023?) when the City of Salina decided to use its own website to publish legal notices beginning with the new year. This move comes after the city commission Monday adopted a resolution to designate the city’s website as the official city “newspaper.”

As the calendar turns to 2024 in a scant five days after this newspaper is printed, it is my plea to you to do something we should all do every day, but we seemingly get further and further away from—being kind.

We can all agree that property taxes are skyrocketing! It is no longer an East River or West River issue—it’s statewide and it’s only getting worse. Many homeowners, whether they live in the city, in the county or on a farm or a ranch, have reached out to their legislators regarding their property taxes, acknowledging their willingness to pay their property taxes, but voicing their concerns about the increased financial burden.

Florida State has legitimate beef

In its final year before it expands to a 12-team field, the College Football Playoff delivered plenty of controversy when it ommitted Florida State University from the playoff field despite the team finishing its season with a perfect 13-0 record, becoming the first undefeated “Power 5” conference champion to ever be excluded from the playoff. With four teams included in the playoff and five large conferences, it’s kind of surprising it took this long for something like this to come about.

Securing America against China

South Dakota has been drawing the blueprint for state-led response to the threat from Communist China. The Biden Administration’s failure to protect Americans from nations that hate us has required states to do the job themselves. We’ve taken steps to secure our state from Communist China, including banning TikTok on state devices. But we can’t continue without some federal legislation.

Time to fix our property tax issues

We can all agree that property taxes are skyrocketing! It is no longer an  East River or West River issue, it’s statewide and it’s only getting  worse. I can’t begin to tell you how many homeowners from across the state  have contacted me and my fellow legislators about their property taxes.
Every individual I’ve corresponded with, whether through letters, emails  or phone calls, has consistently expressed their willingness to pay  their property taxes, but they are very concerned with the increased  financial burden.
