Improvement was the name of the game last Friday evening at Wildcat Field as the Custer High School football team welcomed the third-ranked team in Class A, Canton, to town.
The C-Hawks burst out to a 28-6 lead by the second quarter, but a determined Wildcat squad continued to hang in there and trade punches with the bigger, deeper team before succumbing 55-23.
The Custer High School Wildcat cross country teams raced in the Black Hills Conference at Hart Ranch last Thursday, with the boys coming in third place and the girls in sixth place.
Junior Sean Shipp was the top finisher for the Wildcats, coming in eighth place with a time of 16:21.97. Behind him was senior Drew Lehman, who finished with a time of 16:55.54, good for 12th place.
Earning 16th place was freshman Austin Drew with a time of 17:19.32. The rest of the boys’ pack finished the 5K race within the next minute.

The two teams combined for 14 touchdowns, 110 points and nearly 1,000 yards of offense as the Wildcats outlasted the Rangers 60-50 in a game that saw the Wildcats rush for 428 yards—more than doubling its rushing yardage total for the season to date prior to the game.
The Custer High School Wildcat volleyball team dealt with two losses last week to the Hot Springs Bison and the Wall Eagles.
Last Tuesday, the team traveled to Hot Springs, where they lost three out of four sets. The Wildcats lost the first set 25-22, won the second set 28-26 and then lost two consecutive sets 25-14, 25-23. Ultimately, it was injuries and poor team dynamics that cost the Wildcats the game, said head coach Jill Hohn.
Although the Custer High School soccer team’s season ended with a 7-0 loss to Vermillion in the first round of the Class A playoffs, Custer head coach Hannah Rehmeier said it was exciting to see how much the team grew over the course of the season.
Regan Sorenson’s two-day score of 178 led the way as the Custer High School golf team wrapped up its season with a 13th-place finish at the Class A State Golf Tournament Oct. 2-3 at Hart Ranch south of Rapid City.
Sorenson fired an 87 the first day and followed that up with a 91 the second day to post the best tournament score for Custer.
“I thought overall Regan played well the first day,” Custer head coach Paul Kelley said. “He was doing well the second day until the back nine. He had some bad holes and couldn’t recover from them.”
The Custer High School competitive cheer team competed in the Scooper Spirit Competition in Sturgis last Thursday, earning sixth place with a total of seven teams competing.
With two new athletes joining mid-season, the team is now able to do more complex stunts, helping it to score more points in competition. Now in the end of the season, the biggest challenge for the team has continued to be its small size.
“It’s hard to compete against teams that have 20 athletes when you have eight,” said head coach Trenna Cooper.
The losing streak is over. The monkey is officially off the back.
Powered by a strong performance on both sides of the ball by senior Ryder Bailey, the Custer High School football team snapped the program’s 15-game losing streak last Friday evening at Wildcat Field, defeating Lead-Deadwood 29-19 and allowing the entire program to take a deep breath and release a sigh of relief.
Two years after the program was relaunched, the Custer High School soccer team is officially back in the playoffs.
Thursday the team heads to Vermillion for the first round of the Class A Soccer playoffs. The Wildcats enter the playoffs as the seventh seed, while Vermillion, 8-3, is the second seed. The teams did not meet during the regular season.
The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. Central Time start.
Custer head coach Hannah Rehmeier said film study shows the Tanagers are a solid team all the way around that plays similar to how Custer plays.
The Custer High School cross country team traveled to Sturgis last Thursday to compete in the Sturgis Invitational. The team had some individuals placing highly with the boys team coming in fifth place and the girls team coming in eighth place.
On the course itself, head coach Karen Karim noted that “typically, it’s not the fast course. It’s pretty hilly.”
On the boys team, Sean Shipp was the first to finish the race, earning 11th place with his time of 16:57.81.
One place behind, in 12th, was Drew Lehman, who finished the race in 17:11.89.
